'17 Specials & '18 Midterms Thread

Finished third behind Harley Rouda by 73 votes for the second spot.
That slate article made both Rouda and Keirstead seem very unappealing. Rouda supports Medicare for All, which is very good.

That slate article made both Rouda and Keirstead seem very unappealing but far more appealing than Comrade Rohrabacher so either one has my support. Rouda supports Medicare for All, which is very good.

Fixed.

One thing to note, there are likely a lot of votes that haven't been counted in CA yet since they can mail in ballots so late.

Democrat Arthur wins Missouri election in Northland days after Greitens resigns

Corlew’s official campaign has lagged in TV spending, but the Missouri Senate Campaign Committee spent tens of thousands on ads attacking Arthur.

Robin Martinez, a 54-year-old attorney from the Village of Oaks, said that the attack ads against Arthur, including ones that linked illegal immigration to violence, turned him off Corlew's candidacy.

"It was unseemly and uncalled for," he said about radio ads and mailers attacking Arthur.

Same strategy for every race.

The two wealthy self-funding Dems in CA-39 combined spent over $6 million of their own money on their race. Add in Rourda and Keirstead, and Jacobs from CA-49, that's $10 million spent on their own campaigns. And only two of the five made it through to November.

That’s ridiculous.

Only one from Rouda and Keirstad could have made it. It will be interesting to see if they work together to beat Dana.

Do Republicans really want to be running against the NFL in the middle of the season? It wasn't an all out war two years ago. Now it is. Do urban and suburban Republicans really want to directly take on popular local players?

Most Republicans don't even try to pretend not to be racists anymore, like they used to. Orange Behemoth has really emboldened them.

They burned all their jerseys last year.

Technically this belongs in the FB thread, but has relevance here based on recent comments.

Republicans are so dense. Do they really think that is at all relevant or of substance. It is just stupid and someone made a shirt of that?!?

Good Christ, it's embarrassing.

You could do worse vs. North Korea than 2000+ young men in their athletic prime.

I'm looking through some of the other races from Tuesday, since California got all the attention. Two women won their primaries in Iowa in districts targeted by Dems. Their incumbent opponents both ran opposed so I don't see vote totals, but they each got more votes than Steve King in his deep red district. Abby Finkenauer would be the youngest woman elected to Congress at 29. And she's not new to politics, she's serving her 2nd term as an Iowa state rep and she is backed by multiple unions.

This Iowan is trying to become the youngest woman in Congress. First, she has to beat incumbent Rod Blum.

Flipping Steve King's seat is a major long shot, but the Dems nominated a former pitcher who is from, and played in, Sioux City. A writer from SB Nation has been following him for a few months for this profile:

The Pitcher vs. The King

Honestly, losing the house in 2018 may be better for Republicans. It will harbor all those who survive by being able to blame everything on Democrats (if you think they're doing that now, just wait until they are actually blocking something). They will then have 2 years of doing what they do best, bitching and blaming Dems, before the next presidential election to turn the tide.

McConnell already used this as his excuse to cut the August recess.
