'17 Specials & '18 Midterms Thread

LOL - yep this is exactly why a self-avowed socialist won.

Anyone know this guy? He appears to be young and fairly sane. Also, what's the consensus on the general election?

The person who beat Crowley is a Socialist who opposes everything Trump has ever done in his life.

Trump is such an idiot.

Looks like a Run For Something-backed candidate, former teacher, and current law school student has beaten an incumbent for a state house seat in SC.

This must be absolutely terrifying for the old and conservative among us.

Garvin beat McEachern 70-30.

I hope Crowley and McEachern find a way to help their replacements to successfully represent their districts.

Obviously myself and every sane person in Greenville & Spartanburg counties got off our asses yesterday and voted for Timmons whether we knew anything about him or not. Lee Bright could not be allowed to take that seat.

Timmons is a state senator, attorney, and business owner (owns a crossfit gym and yoga studio). He is young at 34 but comes from a very wealthy Greenville family. He does not side with Trump and that was big for me and all that voted for him. So he is basically a sane Republican not of the party of Trump or the exact opposite of one Lee Bright.

So he is basically... the exact opposite of one Lee Bright.

You could have just left it at that. Lee Bright is abhorrent and the thought of him sitting in the United States House of Representatives on behalf of the State of South Carolina makes me nauseous.

That was exactly the point they were trying to make on the live PSA from Durham earlier this week. Stop with the trying to "win back" the Obama-Trump voters or trying to turn any Trump voters away from their guy (they just dig in more). Concentrate on the issues and turning out the D base instead.

In "rich dudes believing they are the answer" news, the guy who ran from his Hamptons summer home and spent $1 million of his own money won the NY-1 primary, and the guy in Maryland who spent $10 million in his race also won. NY-1 is a Trump +12 district that voted for Obama twice.

In NY-24 the DCCC backed candidate lost handily to a candidate backed by the local party and progressive groups. The district voted for Clinton and the DCCC candidate was on their "red to blue" list. (Some pro-life Facebook posts by the candidate came out during the race, including her participation in the March for Life.)

Greg Abbott called a special election to replace Blake Farenthold. The election is, weirdly, Saturday, and there will likely be a runoff in September. Only problem, the counties say they cannot afford it.

Texas officials rage against ‘crazy’ Farenthold election

After announcing the special election date, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott wrote the millionaire former congressman to request that Farenthold pay for the special election costs himself. Farenthold had originally said he would pay back the $84,000 he used to settle the harassment claim; the governor asked that he apply that money to the local counties to cover the costs of the special election.

Farenthold’s response? No.

“In my opinion, as well as many other county officials I have heard from, a special election was not warranted and should not have been called,” wrote Farenthold in a letter addressed to Abbott. “However, that was your decision based upon the advice you were given. Since I didn’t call it and don’t think it’s necessary, I shouldn’t be asked to pay for it.”

(He's also not paying back the $84,000.)
