'17 Specials & '18 Midterms Thread

CONSERVATIVE VIEWS

Conservative Republicans are staunchly supportive of the president overall, with 86 percent saying they approve of the president's job performance. This uniform approval carries over to most issues, including the economy (95 percent), taxes (90 percent), trade (87 percent) and North Korea (89 percent).

But when it comes to the budget deficit, conservative Republicans are somewhat less approving — 75 percent say they approve of Trump's handling of the issue.

Conservative Republicans also are somewhat less likely to approve of the president on the Russia investigation (76 percent) and health care policy (77 percent).

Probably not the right thread but for christ’s sake...please vote in November unless you’re comfortable with more
of this type of fascist bullshit.

The Boston Globe endorses City Councilor Ayanna Pressley, who is challenging congressman Mike Capuano in the Sept. 4th primary:

Endorsement: Democrats should choose Ayanna Pressley for the Seventh District

But the district needs more than just money (and anyway, Pressley doesn’t seem like she’d be a pushover when it comes to jockeying for federal cash). It also needs an advocate in touch with the everyday experiences of the district’s residents, including the most vulnerable. In addition to her work on liquor licenses, Pressley has also been a strong champion for women and girls, and for victims of sexual assault and human trafficking. Those voices are often absent in Congress — a deficit Pressley would help fix.

Voters might be hesitant to move on from Capuano after his years of experience and the seniority he has accumulated in Congress. But Pressley is a proven advocate with an understanding of the needs of the district, and she would be a fresh voice in Congress. Pressley represents the present of the Seventh District and the future of the Democratic Party. She will serve the district well in Congress.

This is an insane stat if true. I know it has declined some but did not realize the GOP has lost 20% of its “official members” since 2016.

Not sure where Siegfried gets his numbers from.

That projects to 72% approval ratings among people who were Republicans in 2016.

Which is still really high.

Yeah, that's a crock of shite, and most folks around here (Cville area) will realize that. I don't think many folks will be influenced by this ad or the bigfoot erotica. The trouble she has is this is more of a rural than a suburban district. It starts north of Cville, is narrow at the top and widens as it gets to the NC border, but doesn't include the city of Lynchburg at all. The only time in recent history it went blue was in 2008 when Tom Perriello barely won, and that was largely because of an unusually large African American turnout in the rural parts of the district. That's why I think she has little chance and why Dems are polling better in VA 2, 7 and 10 - they're much more suburban and better educated districts. Add to that she was probably the weakest, though best self funded, of the 3 that were vying for the nomination. She'll be viewed in the southern majority of the district as a liberal carpetbagger. One of her 2 opponents was former military, and the other is more folksy with a southern twang, and I think they would have had a better shot in the southern part.

That fits the catamount definition of anti-Semitism as any criticism of Israel.

At least they are portraying the Charlottesville protests as a negative, so progress?

Not so sure. Maybe only to the extent the Unite the Right folks were threatening the local synagogue and lumping Jews in with other undesirables. Or maybe the thing to do is to distinguish between the 2 types of Jews - the Hollywood types, who it's encouraged to hate, and the Zionists, who it's not cool to hate. But then you gotta figure out which Jews are which. If there were only a system of lapel pins or something.

you could use color-coded yarmulkes...but you'd have to guess with some conservative and basically all reform Jews who don't wear them.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R) leads his Democratic challenger, Rep. Beto O’Rourke, by just 1 point in their Texas Senate race, well within the margin of error of a new poll from Emerson College.

The survey, which was released on Monday, found that Cruz leads O'Rourke 38 to 37 percent. Four percent of voters favor a different candidate and 21 percent remain undecided.

I’m not sure how anyone could be undecided about Cruz. Are the undecideds Republicans who hate Cruz and/or Trump but have a tough time voting for a Democrat? Or are they Democrats who don’t know Beto?
