'17 Specials & '18 Midterms Thread

Dozens of vulnerable House Republicans have recently signed on to bills or resolutions in support of pre-existing conditions protections, part of an eleventh-hour attempt to demonstrate their affinity for one of ObamaCare’s most popular provisions.

Thirty-two of the 49 GOP incumbents in races deemed competitive by the nonpartisan Cook Political Report have backed congressional measures on pre-existing conditions in the past six weeks, according to an analysis by The Hill.

The moves, coming in the final weeks of the midterm campaign cycle, mark a course reversal for members of a party that for years railed against ObamaCare, also known as the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and called for its repeal.

Now, facing the threat of a “blue wave” and an onslaught of health-care attacks from Democratic candidates, vulnerable Republicans are running ads on pre-existing conditions and co-sponsoring measures that critics deride as meaningless.

The congressional resolutions are “a quick Hail Mary for a list of endangered incumbents,” said Thomas Miller, a resident fellow at the right-leaning American Enterprise Institute, and co-author of “Why ObamaCare is Wrong for America.”

“They’re intended to provide at least some legislative cover in the event that they can read the polls and know there’s been a stampede of support for the broad-brushed pre-existing conditions protections similar to those in the ACA,” he said.

Well, Pubs “won” the healthcare arguments by lying and demonizing Obama and the ACA instead of working with Dems/Obama. It was a cynical, selfish political ploy—that worked. Even though the ACA was essentially a Republican way to move forward with (some) needed reform.

Now there’s nowhere for them to go except backwards, the details of which are easily perceived as undesirable.

Our political process needs to better reward long term, forward thinking, problem solving efforts instead of short-term inane sloganism and fear mongering.

It’s like the windmill was Comrade Napoleon’s idea from the very beginning.

Notice how these resolutions are not to help Americans with preexisting conditions, but to provide cover to win elections.

Went out canvassing in a red state-level district this past weekend. The field director said that she has been working on campaigns for years and has never seen this level of volunteer activity.

That being said, Adelson just cut another check. Get out there.

Canvassed for the first time yesterday. Went out with a neighbor and friend and another volunteer. I really enjoyed it. At the very worst, it was a nice stroll around my neighborhood. We were looking for Democrats who voted in 2016 but didn't vote in 2014. Several were college students who didn't live at home any more.

The best was the last person. We thought something was wrong because there was a DeSantis mailer that had a sinister shadowy picture of Gillum and some crap about socialism on it. The woman who answered was a local realtor who I recognized from mailers and such. Black, maybe Latina, woman. She immediately said she's a Republican but she plans to vote Democrat down the line. We talked to her for awhile about what she doesn't like about Republicans. She said the one thing she didn't like about Obama was all the Muslims he was letting in because as a Christian she knows what those people are up to. (Ironically, we had just talked to a Syrian neighbor who is pretty damn cool and I wish I could have introduced them.) We avoided cringing and I spun it into saying Democrats are trying to make it easier for the best people of all races and religions to come to the US which she agreed with.

The best part was when her husband came up. Black guy, probably in his late 40s or so. He introduced himself and she told him were Democrats and said, "They're here for our son because we're registered Republicans" to which he said, "Well...I changed my registration a few months ago." She was shocked. Apparently, it's not unusual for canvassers to out a member of the household like that.

Interestingly, her son plays basketball for St. Joe's which I didn't realize was our first opponent in the Myrtle Beach tournament. Apparently [Redacted] had recruited him back in the day and she kept some mail from him about values or something on the fringe. I don't know. It clicked with her.

Another quick note. I've mentioned that our area Democrats club started in January 2017. It met every month at the library and drew about 20-30 people on a good day. I missed the summer meetings because of travel and stuff. I went back in September. It moved to a new location in a ballroom of a local pub. There were about 65 people there. And someone was streaming the meeting to members of the local mosque who couldn't attend because it was a pub. It's impressive how much it has blown up.

You seem to have some misconceptions concerning human nature. Particularly when speaking about the masses.

It seems like a decade ago, but I remember that at the beginning of the year the GOP high command insisted their campaign to keep control of Congress and a majority of statehouses would focus on the great economy and those tax cuts, which voters would surely love. Yet here we are, just three weeks from the election, and the GOP is back to running on social and cultural issues, and attacking the usual suspects like Pelosi, to try and pull out a victory. In the end they always come back to their favorite hits: Democrats are godless Socialist/Commie tax-and-spend Muslim-loving anti-American traitors who support minorities over good white folk, and live in decadent big cities with strange immigrants and look down their noses at Real Americans. Oh, and they like the gheys and transgenders and want to indoctrinate your kids so they're ghey too. If you want to save "your" America, you've got to vote straight Republican. And, increasingly, it seems to work.
