John Collins and the draft

Kind of funny that JC could be projected as an NBA 3 point threat when over his two years in college he attempted one three point shot and made none.

Then again, understand that evaluating for the NBA is based upon projecting what the player will become.

He was our only post threat. It would have been a waste for him to shoot jumpers for us.

Projection is based on his actual performance though, mainly FT shooting.

He did hit 16/25 at the combine...

Yeah, I can't imagine that Collins will be a legit 3 point shooter this year or next. But his form appears fairly solid, which should allow him to develop one over the next few years.

That type of projection is what the NBA does now for its draft.

Not if he made them at a 40% clip.

He was basically our only offensive rebounder and created open lanes to the basket for our guards which created lay[ups and passes to open threes. Without him in the post, many of those opportunities wouldn't have existed.

It's not as simple as a shooting percentage on threes. BTW, he shot 62.2% on twos. That's better than 40% on threes.

GD Manning. Why didn't you let the kid pull up from deep???

Because to equal his production from inside, he would have had to shoot over 41% on threes. Plus, other people would have had to contribute on the offensive boards. His presence required almost a double team on the boards most of the time which kept the other team from benefiting from our weak rebounding and kept them from running as much.

McClinton was our best 3 pt. shooter. Ever.

JC had one of the most efficient college seasons in recent history. There wasn't any need for him to shoot threes.

So, assuming talent generally holds relative, why would there be a reason for him to shoot threes in the NBA?

Because NBA teams have good players at every position and his staying under the hoop creates more space on the wings for his team's best shooters.

From what was seen at the Combine, it looks as if JC will take some threes, but his special talents in and around the lane will make it easier for his team to score.

Because he won't be going up against less talented college kids in the post in the NBA?

He also won't be going up against an empty gym defending him from 3. If my choice is John Collins trying to score in the post against Paul Milsap or Kelly Olynyk, or John Collins trying to shoot and make a 3 against Paul Milsap or Kelly Olynyk, I'm going with the post option every damn time.

Haven't watched much NBA basketball in the last 5 years, huh.

Watched plenty of it. Just because teams continuously jack 3s doesn't mean it is a good idea or winning basketball. 5 of the top 10 teams in 3 point attempts per game didn't make the playoffs, and Houston and Portland got bounced early. Yeah if you have Steph Curry or Kevin Durant then fire away, but that doesn't mean John Collins should start hoisting given how well he can score in the post.

1 and 2 seeds in East and 1 and 3 in West were in the top 4 in 3 point attempts per game.

Right, because they have players who are good shooters who can make them. Nobody is confusing John Collins with Steph, Klay, Eric Gordon, Kyle Korver, Danny Green, or Avery Bradley from deep. There is a reason Tristan Thompson, David Lee, and Montrezl Harrell aren't shooting 3s.

The ability to knock down the 3 at a 35% rate for a PF opens up so much. Stop being dumb.
