Please, please, please.... The only thing that could make this any better is if TD comes back for a year. Well, and they trade up for Collins to clear some cap space.

Manu is likely retiring, and Parker is getting close, so losing those 2 salaries would help them afford Paul. But no way is he going to make as much there as he will in Lob City. Is he willing to take that much of a shave? If he is, he'd finally shake the whole Can't Play in the 3rd round thing.

Easy for me to say I guess but at some point what's the difference in 200 million or 175 million?

I thought I read it was 205 vs 155 (4 vs 5 years though).

I could probably easily double check the numbers but I'm lazy and don't care that much.

Spurs Looking Seriously at Acquiring CP3 per ESPN

Does that take into account income tax differences between CA (high) and TX (none) and perhaps cost of living?

This is pure Spurs donk / Wake Forest fan porn.

Sure, it'd be great if it happens... But seems pretty far fetched.

it's 4/152 vs 5/205.

if we look at average annual value (AAV) it's 38mm vs. 41mm.

CAs top marginal income tax rate is 13.3%. NBA players pay state income tax for the location of every game they play (jock tax). So looking at the 41 home games alone in CA vs TX, CP would have to pay around an extra $2.7mm in taxes. You also have to take into account SA plays more road games within TX and LAC plays more road games within CA, ultimately the state tax probably brings the AAV of both contracts close to equal. The massive money difference is being able to lock in the 5th year, the most valuable year in escalating NBA max contracts, now.

i read this marc stein article, it did not give a compelling case of how the spurs get to $35mm in cap space this summer in order to be able to even offer CP that contract.

Spurs will need some real magic to make cap room for a max contract for CP3. That's not likely to happen.

Tony Parker's contract will still be on the books for 17-18 even if he doesn't play a minute or retires because of NBA injury/retirement rules. Pau still has a contract for another year if he wants it. And why wouldn't he want it? Nobody else will pay him close to what the Spurs owe him next year.

Could the clips sign and trade Paul on the super max deal?

if TP retires, or even if he doesn't, Spurs only option with his salary is probably waive and stretch, which allows them to spread his ~15mm cap hit over 3 years, to about $5mm per year. Even if they do this max cap space is foiled by pau's player option of $16mm. if pop could do a jedi mind trick and get pau to go against his own self interest it would be possible.

danny green's contract is actually pretty good for where NBA salaries are in this cap, they could probably move him easily and renounce all other FAs and come in right under max cap space in that scenario with TP waive and stretched. that might be better than trying to move pau where you'll be forced to throw in picks and/or young players to get someone to take him.

Yeah. I'd rather ride out LMA and Pau's contracts and go with Murray. Kawhi turns 26 next month. There's no window. Get younger and more athletic. Be ready to pounce when the Warriors break up. Not getting CP could be like not getting Kidd.

no, dan gilbert threw a hissy fit in the CBA after LeBron left so sign and trade players are only eligible for the 4 year max. but that is another option for the spurs if CP says he wants to play in SA and the clippers could get some stuff back without losing him for nothing. but this doesn't usually work unless the team you want to go to already actually has the space, because ballmer could just tell CP to kick rocks.

It sucks that any player should have to give up money to play where they WANT to play but if he wins a title while still an elite player then you'd think that covers the monetary difference

I hate Doc Rivers so much, he has truly wasted the best pg of the best pg generation

I need clarification on this "best PG generation."

CP3, Steph, Westbrook and Harden will all end up as top 10 PGs all time. And that doesn't even include Giannis.

Magic
Cousy
Stockton
Thomas
Robertson
Kidd
Nash

Who's spot does Harden take?

You forgot a few:

Oscar
Clyde
Pistol
Logo (listed as PG in bball reference)
AI
Tiny
Payton

Ok. That's what I thought. I don't think CP is in the same generation as them. And even if he was, I doubt 10 years from now he will be considered the best of those four.

I think CP is the best PG of a weak PG generation of guys like Parker, Deron Williams, and Lowry.

If Pistol had ever played with decent players, while in his prime, he could have been considered a Top 5 PG (although I disagree with BBall Ref having West as a PG).

People also forget how great Clyde was. He controlled the game on both ends of the court.

Neither Harden nor Westbrook are as good as AI was.
