The Last Jedi

Last night around 9 the Audience Score on RT was 99%....then at 4am when I got home from the 12:25am showing it was 71%....now it's 57%.

Seems like all the twitter/etc commentary is polarized to "best since Empire" or "prequel bad" with a good sprinkling of "3-4 great scenes and then a prequel piece of crap".
I saw that too and was wondering why the discrepancy as some people are saying it's amazing and others are saying that it ruined star wars and is the worst star wars movie.

I the TLJ is higher than 8.5, but you're right about Empire. It's the best of the series and one of the all-time movie greats.

I know he’s old as shit but I wish they’d give Kasdan a movie

Didn’t like the last 15 minutes. Solid B+. It’s getting unnecessary blowback already from people. Kylo was the best part.

More like the last yeti. Why do people like Kylo so much, I find it hard to take him seriously.

Yeah he’s just a pouty pissed off millenial, IMO. But he’s going up against a girl with no character development and an ex storm trooper that literally serves no purpose in the series so not much competition

I really don't get the "Finn serves no purpose" take.

Finn's purpose is clear. He's the only defector in the series. He gives us completely new information about stormtroopers and what is was like to be raised by the Empire. We knew almost nothing going into TFA. He also helps move the plot with crucial information about the Empire and Starkiller base that leads to its destruction. Feel free to argue with the casting or whether you like the character or not, but he clearly serves a purpose.

He is there as a cop out to know everything there is to know about the First Order. Somehow he was a janitor and a Stormtrooper? They have tons of stormtroopers, why the double dipping of duties?

He got promoted. It was obvious that the opening scene of TFA was his first action as a stormtrooper.

Uhhh diversity.

Good movie. Needed an editor with a 30 minute long blade. Not nearly as bad as the nerd herds are saying.

I can definitely see why Star Wars bros are pissed off, but I really enjoyed it. As others have pointed out, there were a few moments of plot holes or where serious leaps needed to be made, but overall this was pretty great. I don't know where it ranks on the all-time Star Wars list, just like I don't know how to compare Willie Mays with Ken Griffey Jr. That said, I think it's better than TFA because it's more original.

So many directions in which they can go with IX. I'm not an Abrams hater per se, but I hope he takes more chances and shows more creativity than he did with TFA. I don't want another retread of ROTJ.

I have more specific thoughts, but it seems like the spoilery stuff belongs in the nerd thread.

I loved it. It was the first time since I was a kid watching Star Wars movies in the theater that I felt like a kid watching Star Wars movies in the theater again.

But I think I like this one a lot more than others. I really like that it is different, and kind of weird. I agree that it is too long and the casino planet side story could be completely axed with no story consequence, but I also heard that one of the "rules" Johnson had to follow was that he had to have three distinct storylines through the movie (Rey/Luke, Poe/Leia, Finn/Rose). So I think his hand was forced a bit to keep that in there.

I actually rank this one really high though. I'd go:

Empire Strikes Back
The Last Jedi
A New Hope
The Force Awakens
Return of the Jedi
Revenge of the Sith
Rogue One
Phantom Menace
Attack of the Clones

I change these around in my head often although the top one and the bottom two never change.
