Immigration Reform

*I had to delete the tweets in the quote because they fuck up the formatting

It's a stupid law, and it's also the law. The material support element as it applies to asylum claims is ridiculous and I've even said as much in the past. The material support element predates Trump by several years.

Asylum seekers

Speaking on Hugh Hewitt’s radio talk show about President Trump’s “zero tolerance” border policy last week, Attorney General Jeff Sessions claimed, “We don’t want to do this at all. If people don’t want to be separated from their children, they should not bring them with them.”

Oh, no, someone is forcing him to implement his wicked policy.

That’s no different from the man who beats his wife and says, “Look what you made me do.”

There are a lot of asylum seekers who are doing exactly what the U.S. government has instructed them to do if they want asylum: They’re not actually crossing illegally, but presenting themselves at a port of entry at the border.

Then the government — the U.S. government, which represents all of us — takes away their children and throws them in jail.

“Criminalizing and stigmatizing parents who are only trying to keep their children from harm and give them a safe upbringing will cause untold damage to thousands of traumatized families who have already given up everything to flee terrible circumstances in their home countries,” Erika Guevara-Rosas, Amnesty International’s Americas director, said in response to the policy.

America, where is your heart? Where is your soul? Where is your decency?

Should help with the female vote.

Republican women barely care about domestic violence in their churches much less happening to immigrant women.

Thread from an immigration lawyer:

The irony is that Sessions and his ilk would cheerfully use domestic violence as justification for the Muslim ban, assuming he has't already.

Trump administration launches bid to catch citizenship cheaters

The Trump administration has made these investigations a bigger priority, he said. He said he expects cases will focus on deliberate fraud but some naturalized Americans may feel uneasy with the change.

"It is clearly true that we have entered a new chapter when a much larger number of people could feel vulnerable that their naturalization could be reopened," Chishti said.

For many years, most U.S. efforts to strip immigrants of their citizenship focused largely on suspected war criminals who lied on their immigration paperwork, most notably former Nazis.
Since 1990, the Department of Justice has filed 305 civil denaturalization cases, according to statistics obtained by an immigration attorney in Kansas who has defended immigrants in these cases.

The attorney, Matthew Hoppock, agrees that deportees who lied to get citizenship should face consequences but worries other immigrants who might have made mistakes on their paperwork could get targeted and might not have the money to fight back in court.

Cissna said there are valid reasons why immigrants might be listed under multiple names, noting many Latin American immigrants have more than one surname. He said the U.S. government is not interested in that kind of minor discrepancy but wants to target people who deliberately changed their identities to dupe officials into granting immigration benefits.

"The people who are going to be targeted by this — they know full well who they are because they were ordered removed under a different identity and they intentionally lied about it when they applied for citizenship later on," Cissna said. "It may be some time before we get to their case, but we'll get to them."

Don't know much about Cissna himself, but nothing about this administration leads me to believe that it will play out as he described.

Ryan announces DACA votes as discharge petition stalls

Republicans trying to force a vote on a bill to protect DACA recipients fall short of the number of signatures needed. So instead they'll vote on two bills next week that are both unlikely to pass.

The development effectively kills the discharge petition campaign, a staggering loss for moderates seeking to pass legislation protecting Dreamers. Under a tentative agreement between conservatives in the House Freedom Caucus and moderates, a vote on the Goodlatte bill would end the discharge petition.

Moderates are already suggesting that they could try to mount another discharge petition later in the year. But it‘s unclear that would yield a different result.

The two-vote solution is a victory for GOP leaders, who were able to dissuade Republicans from signing the petition and triggering the bipartisan votes. Many believed the discharge petition would be a huge embarrassment to the GOP since it would likely result in passage of a bill giving citizenship to Dreamers without any major immigration crackdown demanded by most Republicans.

The latest round of negotiations came as the moderates’ discharge petition appeared to be losing steam. Moderates were counting on Reps. Dennis Ross (R-Fla.) and Newhouse to sign on, becoming the 217 and 218 signatories respectively. But House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy has convinced Ross to hold off by promising him a vote on a guest worker program before the August recess. Ryan did the same with Newhouse.

TPS decisions are due within the next month for Yemeni and Somali nationals.

Deportation of Sudanese with cancelled TPS scheduled to begin at the beginning of this November, with Nepalese, Nicaraguan, Haitians and Salvadorians to follow in 2019.

With those already cancelled, it will affect about 300,000, many of whom have been here working for over 10 years - Able to work, but not eligible for a green card.

What the fuck. I mean. What the fuck.

That baby was MS13 animal material, for sure.

TAKE IT AWAY!

['merica losing its soul]

My wife was a green-card-holding resident alien when we married.

After we had children, she naturalized. Because it’s a crazy world and you never know what kind of stupidity might rule us one day.

One day has arrived, damn it.

I remember hearing this too.
