Immigration Reform

Limiting competition isn't very bootstrap of the republicans. If you pit a beatdown American who has had every opportunity afforded to them through the sheer luck of being born here vs an immigrant from a country of nothing then the American citizen should have nothing to be worried about. Bootstrap up and get to winning.

LOL at ELC defending that soulless piece of shit Miller. Good job, good effort.

Feel free to put together a defense of Miller's buddy Richard Spencer next.

OK, do we have too many or too few legal immigrants today?

Seems to me the bigger problem is "illegal" immigration. And that we could go a long ways towards solving this problem if we had a well-regulated and robust "guest worker" program.

4. something % unemployment, loads of people retiring exiting the workforce, and lots of people running around with absolute shitty college degrees who graduated with no knowledge thinking immigrants are the problem. Oh, and those educations were funded by the taxpayer by and large. We should want our companies to have the best possible workers for the job, as long as companies aren't abusing the programs in place.

Seems right.

So what's really driving the push to limit immigration?

Well, sure glad we're getting rid of the bad hombres: Salvadorean brothers deported short of pursuing soccer dream.

Two brothers who came to the US as children escaping violence in El Salvador have been deported because they still have no legal status more than a decade later.
Lizandro Saravia was notifying authorities he had won a place at university in North Carolina on a soccer scholarship, when he was detained with Diego. Within five days they were deported.

Changing thread title to "Immigration Reform".

Scapegoating and fear. Also considering all the other problems listed require detailed plans, thoughts, and are really difficult this is the easiest way to look like you are doing something. Step 1. Assign blame to something that's easy to fix. Step 2. Easily fix the made up problem. Step 3. Tell everyone the problem is solved and get lots of credit. Step 4. Use this praise to stay in power and by the time everyone figures out that it was all bullshit and their problems still exist you will be long gone.

Acosta is a chump and Miller thoroughly destroyed him in the press briefing. It was fun to watch. At least Trump has found an articulate spokesman for this particular issue.

I don't know what's in the legal immigration bill. I suspect a lot of good things, some bad things, and plenty of things that remain unaddressed. I doubt that med school grads or nurses will be touched.

Jesus dude you thought that was fun to watch? That guy is a psychotic extreme weirdo nationalist douchebag. Did you read this? https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2017/05/stephen-miller-duke-donald-trump

Sadly seems too true.

We overly politicize all our problems and invent problems to politicize for personal gain/power. How in the world do we get around to solving some problems? How do we effectively reward politicians for working together to solve problems and improve policy? Do we need a different system? Or how do we make this one work better?

The left is aghast that somebody on the right in the current administration actually has a brain and ability to speak. That article is half about the Duke lacrosse case, which did in fact turn out to be a witch hunt. Then it talks about him being a rabble rouser at Duke and in school and having the audacity to like the machismo of Captain Kirk, and OMG he quoted Teddy Roosevelt, and OMG he knew some white nationalist nutjob at Duke.

Yes, as I mentioned, he does have a brain and an ability to speak, that's why it is terrifying that he is pulling punches in the White House since he has the mindset of a white supremacist.

Note that most immigrants do not arrive with natural empathy for the West. Most forsake countries that are hostile to the West. International surveys reveal that the United States, for example, is not popular in China, Latin America, or the Middle East-the current popular launching pads to America. In such places, popular opinion is shaped by the relentless propaganda of autocratic governments, which deride Western decadence, colonialism, imperialism, and racism. Latin American poverty, for example, is often explained as a result of el Norte exploitation rather than flawed political institutions.

Why would they choose to leave those countries to come to the west if they hated it so much? It seems unfair (likely purposely so, in the mind of the writer) to apply national surveys from an entire country to the people that chose to leave that country.

Western governments and the larger culture could easily instruct the immigrant that the Western tradition is far more likely to embrace constitutional government, personal freedom, free-market economics, the importance of private property, religious tolerance, free expression, due process, an independent judiciary, and a larger culture of self-criticism and introspection. But to do so would put the lie to multiculturalism and the belief in different but equal cultures.

These precise Western values allow the immigrant to enjoy a security, affluence, and freedom unknown in his abandoned homeland. Yet, we, the host, prefer not to "judge" those other places, and thus do not fully embrace the immigrant's ostensible wish to become one of us. We dare not ethnocentrically elevate our culture over others. Instead, we rebrand the human sins of slavery, sexism, and racism as uniquely Western depravities rather than age-old pathologies that predated the West and still exist unchecked outside it. The immigrant immediately senses that his troubled Western host is not so much privileged as unsure and unhappy-and ripe for psychological exploitation. Hyphenation and tribalism, not the melting pot, are often seen as the natural, expected and more "authentic" path for the recently arrived.

The new arrival to Western lands is soon patronized as an icon of "difference." The immigrant is not usually asked to learn the language of his new homeland, much less to quickly assimilate and integrate into Western culture. Instead, the Western multiculturalist host allows the newcomer to pick and choose from a buffet of culture and language: to set up a Sharia court in London, to practice female circumcision in France, to conduct business in Spanish at the DMV office in Bakersfield, or simply to ignore seeking legal status. He also finds an existing rich menu of grievances lodged against a stereotyped dominant white, male, heterosexual Christian culture, which is to be faulted for its past sins, while never praised for having played a major part in the creation of something desirable in the present. A newcomer from Jalisco may have experienced racism only in Mexico, but the second that he crosses the border, he at once finds careerist benefits in regurgitating new gripes against his generous host-without acknowledging that, for some reason, the water is suddenly safe to drink, the police do not take petty bribes, the hospitals serve all comers, and people of all backgrounds line up patiently to be treated equally by government clerks.

The highlighted part certainly isn't talking about America.

Then again, brown people can't be expected to be as cultured as white people. That is the basic premise of the article.

Lucrative careers are made through identity politics. Those politicians are selfish, evil, and keep the man down in exchange for votes.

The current president ran on identity politics.

Nah, the article is talking about China, where newborns are left to die. Tiamanen square is what happens to protesters burning cities in America. Cops, well sure they take bribes. The mafia did well during the days of Al Capone. However, the cops usually protect citizens and aren't running with drug lords and destroying cities.

I wish we could define "brown". Is that everyone but white? I guess yellow can go either way?

Multi-culture and interracial marriages are a beautiful thing. A very beautiful thing.

Who would of thought Americans choose to segregate themselves by their racial identity? It's not always the white man who's the racist. Cut the crackers some slack.

There is such a thing as an American. Without the hyphen. Join the club, you may like it.

You haven't been around much. So you don't know that I am anti-hyphen.

How do you speak for his "mindset"? He articulated a response to immigration reform and therefore he's a white supremacist?

Having King, Miller and Bannon around him sure makes it look like he supports white supremacy.

LOL dude he hooked his wagon to another lunatic fringe radio asshat and dreamt of white nationalism and thought the fags needed to be cured, among other whackjob shit.

I believe you are the one who is all chubbed over the fact that there is an articulate member of the admin, not me. Just because someone is smart and can speak on high level does not mean the content of what they say should be scrutinized less. The guy is a fucking lunatic and a xenophobe and possibly a dangerous racist
