The Official John Collins ROY Watch thread

Cavanaugh seems to be playing pretty well. 13 and 6 with 3-3 from 3.

Playing very well indeed. And doing lots of those key little things in the 4th qtr here, corralling loose balls, setting good screens, blocking out for some boards and burying a corner 3 to keep the lead.

Hawks down 2 with FT's to Bazemore coming...37 secs left, 106 - 104 Pelicans.

Only makes the 2nd, but Hawks will have the final shot to tie or win assuming they don't give up a 3.

Think John has 12 or 14 with 6 or 7 boards. Nice 4th qtr despite getting mauled by Cousins on several plays (mostly on the defensive end, but was fouled on a layup attempt that did not get called) before Demarcus went out for A.D.

Missed 3 by Pelicans so Hawks have ball with shot clock off, out to Baze who fumbles it, but picked up by Schroder who inexplicably passes it out of bounds trying to hit Cav in the corner for an open 3. That's what it has come to for ATL, Tyler Cavanaugh is THE guy you look for to win the game....ooops.

Turnover NOLa after trying the long lob to AD, but only 0.7 secs on the clock (really should be about 1.4 but no review for some reason) after Baze wraps it up and calls time. Praying for a miracle...cue Tyler Cavanaugh, amirite??

Inbounds tooooooo Baze off the curl, shoots from 40 annnnndddd, airball. About 5 feet short. Wah waah

Schoeder drew AD who was guarding Cavanaugh and made a horrible pass to Cavanaugh who was open for a baseline jumper.

What the hell is going on?

There's no real dominant #2 in the ROY race. We're a Ben Simmons injury and JC getting 30 MPG away from this being somewhat close. Lonzo and Dennis Smith are both shooting 30% from the field.

Also worth noting that Cav has come a long way in his athleticism and ability to think quick on his toes...made a real nice jumping touch-pass out to Belinelli for a 3 on a ball that was too high for him in the paint, and earlier in the first half saw him make a nice little fake, dribble drive to his left before hitting a Larry Bird-esque step back jumper from 18' from his off foot I think.

Atta boy Cav! Great to see him getting some serious real mins in the NBA. Think he belongs.

I guess Buzz gets 1/2 credit for the meteoric rise of the one and only Tyler Cav

Early in the 4th quarter with JC already with 4 fouls there was a play with cousins going up for a shot with JC and Prince both guarding him closely. Ref called a foul. As soon as the whistle blew you could hear the hawks players yelling "12" lobbying the ref that Prince was the fouler not JC. Prince got the foul.

Tatum starts for the team with the league’s best record....

Last three games 15 PPG, 75% from the field, 7 RPG in 23 MPG.

If he gets his numbers to 18/10 he might have a chance. You need Simmons to get injured before too long or his body of work will be good enough to win it.

This is fun to watch.

Sure. Ben Simmons is being an asshole about this. But he did get his 36 minutes today and he put up 21 and 9. And his FG% is silly the past 4 games.

I guess there was an ESPN poll of experts of "If you could redraft this draft, who would be #1 overall" and while Tatum got 75% of the votes, John Got at least one.

Also: Rookies who qualified for the minutes leaderboard and put up as many PTS, REB & BLK per 36 minutes as John Collins is now? Shaquille O'Neal, Arvydas Sabonis & Ralph Sampson. That's it.

His first game over 28 minutes.

^ lot of high percentage but a couple elbow Js too. if he can start getting the minutes he'll put up the numbers. His NBA game kinda reminds me of a poor man's Amare? How's his D looking?

If he can stay out of foul trouble his minutes will go up. He’s averaging 4 fouls in 22 minutes per game.

I like the minutes he's getting now. It is a long season, and he is young, needs more weight and strength, and still has foul problems. I'd much prefer they give him 22-25 mpg, and if he is hot, let him stay in longer. Otherwise, the Hawks are going nowhere this year. Let a lot of guys play and see what happens, while keeping them all fresh for the entire season. Lean dogs run late. No need to wear out your No. 1 pick early in a throw away year. The Hawks are well aware how good he is and are bringing him along exactly right, IMHO. They are grooming and prepping him for the future.
