There was a great article I read a few weeks ago from a historian talking about white people's reactions to slave narratives. His point that the mainstream white people reaction to black people telling our own stories is "WHY DO YOU LIE????!!!?!???" and it has always been that way.

We've even seen on this board that white posters still don't believe slavery was as bad as slaves described.

An entire race that wasn't allowed to learn to read or write or else be criminally punished (sometimes by death). Slave owners that would whip slaves to within an inch of death despite that slave obeying completely, just to make an example to the rest of the slaves. Hunting dogs being employed to track down slaves that just wanted to be free. Black prisoners used as "workers" (read: slaves) until the mid-20th century in the South. Girls being sexually assaulted by their owners and then beaten for becoming pregnant. Owners encouraging rape amongst slaves so the women would get pregnant to breed more slaves. Babies were weaned within a few months of birth, causing double the infant mortality rate of black babies to white babies.

This was 5-6 generations ago. Elderly white voters in the 2016 election likely grew up with a grandparent that lived during the Civil War and slavery. They are passing down their warped worldview to their kids and grandkids. And we wonder why the South is so fucking ass backward. We are still 1-2 generations away from any sort of real progress on the matter. Baby boomers and Gen X will need to die off, then hopefully we will be far enough removed from slavery that Southerners will finally be like, "Yeah, we fucked up, let's make everyone equal."

ETA: I'm not saying ONLY Southerners are the racists that are causing the clear inequalities in our country, but they are the ones propagating it the most.
 
Denying equal education to black people.
Overseers beating compliant black people.
Using dogs to track black people.
Imprisoning black people to build a cheap workforce.
Low rates of breastfeeding among black babies.

These aren't old problems.
 
That's a great Facebook post. I would love to see how the board conservatives respond to it.
 
Either boycott the NFL or don’t. You just gave them your money, you dolt. Not to mention all the money wasted for security for Pence to show up to a game he had no intention of watching. They knew this would happen. This is political grandstanding paid for by taxes. Assholes.

Two weeks after President Trump decreed that NFL players who kneel during the national anthem should be fired, Vice President Mike Pence walked out of Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday after about 20 members of the San Francisco 49ers knelt during the anthem. The 49ers were in town to play the Indianapolis Colts.

Pence was in town to upstage Peyton Manning.

That's a solid lead in.

And, while the GOP rural white base may currently be winning political elections, they've been losing the culture wars for a long, long time. They lost the battle over legal segregation, they lost the battle to legalize abortion, they lost the fight over gay rights and gay marriage, and the culture and society in general - even among many Republicans - has been moving in a more liberal direction on sex, marriage, religion (church attendance is steadily declining), etc. I've become convinced that this, as much as anything, is what is driving Trump supporters - they see Trump as a last-ditch effort to reverse the tide and return America to some earlier, 1950s-style haven. Their problem is that I don't think we're going back, because the great majority of Americans (including, privately, a good many Republicans) don't want to. If gay marriage or legal abortion is overturned, I think the vigorous opposition to Trump you're seeing now will only increase in size and passion. And, what's more, the GOP Establishment knows this, even if Trump's rural base doesn't (or doesn't care). Electing right-wingers like Trump, Cruz, and Roy Moore isn't going to stop the long-term changes in our culture. Church attendance will continue to decline, LGBT rights and other minority rights will steadily continue to be accepted, racial and ethnic diversity will continue to increase, and the culture as a whole will continue to move towards an urbanized, diverse society instead of a rural, small-town, religious fundamentalist one.
