Official Charlotte Hornets Offseason Thread - Biz back, Monk out, stocking up on TP

Just horrific defensive rebounding. They played good D on first attempts, but it seemed like Cleveland got the offensive rebound on the miss or a loose ball every damn time. Extremely frustrating. MKG and Batum both played great, so there is that. Marvin is awful, and Howard getting fouls called for breathing didn't help. But yeah, that is the first time I remember Lebron ever getting 4 fouls called on him and we completely shit the bed when he went out.

And I have more irrational sports hate for Channing Frye than possibly any other athlete. That joker has made a college and NBA career out of simply playing like a pussy, and yet he kills us every time.

Cliff shouldn’t be allowed back on the plane. After 5 years we don’t even give a shit about his mantra of trying on defense and keeping care of the ball anymore, he throws out the worst bench lineups of all time, and still not a single fucking inbounds play that can even get the ball inbounds to a Hornet player let alone get a good look

Put together two decent home wins over the Clips and Wolves, I'll take it. Dawight continues to play like a monster, 25 and 20 last night with 4 blocks, and hit his FTs when they were intentionally fouling him at the end. Frank also playing strong with 24 off the bench. Lamb continues to impress and Batum is working his way back in. Batum's all-around game is definitely better as the 3rd or 4th scoring option in most cases. MKG's fugly jumper is falling, which is a welcome addition.

The downside is that Monk's minutes have gone to shit as MCW is playing very strong D in the backup PG role and Lamb/Batum/MKG/Bacon rotate through the SG minutes. I get playing D over O, but I also don't want our best pure scorer rotting on the bench all game. And Marvin just sucks. I mean really, really sucks. His outside shot isn't what it once was, and without that he gets no space to get to the hole with his relatively limited athleticism. Clifford praises his D, but I don't know how much of that is him versus how much is the fear of D12 on help rotations.

Clifford is frustrating in general. Last night, Frank was unstoppable in the second half, both from outside and taking smaller players the basket. He had a season-high 24 points with maybe 5 minutes to go in the 4th quarter, and Cliff yanked him for Marv because that is the rotation pattern. Isn't part of his job to read the #hothand? Marv sucked all game and Frank was on fire, why the hell would you make that change? I assume the rational was D on KAT, but Dwight had helped well enough on him to where he was generally ineffective all game anyway and we were up double digits. Let the Tank roll and try to stretch the lead, don't Grobe it up by playing not to lose.

Hornets stole that one tonight, but we'll take it. Lamb and Kemba really carried them late, and Dwight had a great game, including a big block at the end of regulation and a big putback on an airball late in OT. I can't believe the Hornets didn't win a single overtime game last year, did not remember that.

It is absolutely crazy to think that we got Dwight for Belinelli and a fucking Plumlee. He has to make the All-Star game this year, right? 26 and 13 last night, plus great D. The other guys all seem to love playing with him, I don't get the cancer train of thought. He looks like he is having a blast out there. Lamb should also be at the top of the list for 6th man of the year. He has improved so much, he had 24 and 7 last night and I think his +/- was +26. His rebounding is great from the wing and he plays strong D.

Downside was that Batum reaggrevated his elbow, and Monk didn't see the court at all.

More late game collapses. The problem to me is Clifford. We have significant talent to get leads on good teams, but always find a way to blow it. Our in bounds plays are awful, our plays out of timeouts are awful, and the substation patterns don't adjust based on in-game performance. MKG, Lamb, and Frank are all playing the best ball of their careers, D12 looks like he did 10 years ago, Zeller, Batum, and MCW are solid contributors, and yet we still find ways to lose every close game. I think he is one of those guys who would be a great assistant but isn't a good head coach.

Cliff’s gotta go. Get fizdale while he is available. There are 4 big issues with him for me:

#1 he’s just been here a long time. There’s a reason so few coaches in almost any sport make it past 3 or 4 seasons with the same team. The message just stops resonating
#2 just terrible rotations that he always sticks with several minutes too long every single game.
#3 game has passed his defensive philosophy by. We crash the paint at all costs when everyone else in the league has realized you have to run dudes off the 3 point line at all costs. And we now have the athletes and wing depth to do it too so there’s just no excuse
#4 offense collapses in the clutch damn near every time. Ends in Kemba or lamb having to dribble around and launch a 1 on 5 shot

I would take any other coach in the league over Cliff with this team at this point. Hoiberg is the only one who’d give me pause, and even he managed to beat cliff this season

This team is awful, we are getting [name redacted]-level coaching right now. Clifford is out sick and Silas is even worse. No matter the opponent, we are going to collapse in the 4th quarter. In crunch time, the other team gets shots at the rim while we force contested jumpers. I understand there are major injuries (Zeller 6-8 weeks, Frank, Lamb, Batum), but there is still enough talent that we should not be losing at home to the Bulls and Lakers. We are wasting Dwight's rejuvenation and Kemba's prime. I agree with Tintin, fire the whole staff and bring in Fizdale.

ETA: As an example, Johnnie O'Bryant hijacked the offense last night and must have shot on 7 of 9 possessions in the 4th Q without running any sort of set. Johnnie Fucking O'Bryant. And most of them were awful, contested shots. While Monk, Bacon, MCW, and Marvin were on the floor. Yet Silas kept him in there and didn't tell him to stop.

Got a good road win in OKC against the reeling Thunder, I'll take it. Lamb and Frank were back, which helped. Who knows if that win was more a product of us playing well or the Thunder imploding, but it is better than another loss. We play okay against the decent teams, but we need to get our shit together against less-talented teams.

He very well might. Among C in East:

5th in PPG
3rd in RPG
6th in BPG
15th in +\-

For comparison (in 6 fewer games), Embiid is:

2nd in PPG
4th in RPG
3rd in BPG
2nd in +/-

Drummond is a contender, as are Whiteside and Turner (and stupidly Love), and it depends on if they classify Kristaps and Horford as C too.

Do they still do it by specific positions? I thought they went to some sort of Guard/Wing/Big bullshit millennial classification last season.

It was 19-14 in the hornets favor when frank checked in. It’s now 38-23 rockets. He should’ve been a DNP tonight.

I want to know what kind of insane bender MJ must be on in casinos around the world to be totally cool with almost paying the luxury tax for this team, front office, and coaching staff

That game just highlighted how completely useless Batum and Marv are against good competition. Neither ever shows up. MKG, Kemba, and D12 all played fantastic, yet they got pounded because the two forwards are complete stiffs on both ends of the court.

Pathetic final 4.5 minutes of the first quarter sealed victory for the Rockets.

And we have got to find somebody who can shoot threes. Actually we need two or three guys who can shoot threes.

WTF is that updated shit ?

I didn't say to update anything.

To be fair, Batum shouldn’t be on the floor against any team right now. Dude is clearly badly injured
