The religious right's hypocrisy now on full display

end the tax exemptions for churches. If they can practice their hate speech towards GLBTQ people, evil dems, etc they can start paying taxes.

Dreaded self quote and add that they only believe in religious freedom when it is used to justify their political aspirations. 2nd amendment good. Separation of church and state for everyone else - aaahhhh sariah law! - but my pastor says we have to vote and legislate god's will so everyone can be saved.

Don't know about the first part, but the second part is probably spot on. Next on the Trump crises that he will completely fuck up if given a second term is war.

Rolling Stone has a long but detailed and great article out describing Little Falwell's rise and fall at Liberty University. It gives far more detail about his tyrannical rule over the university than has previously been published. It also gives a good account of what a miserable place Liberty is to work at, especially if you're a member of the faculty. Low wages, no tenure except for the law school, constant firings (and threats of being fired) from the HR Department, constant pressure to keep your numbers of students high, and lots more. What a crock that place is.

Some choice quotes:

"Walker feels lucky that her major was in one of the departments at Liberty — English — where professors encouraged critical thinking. But Walker, like several others I spoke with, found the required curriculum for freshmen and sophomores at Liberty both ridiculously easy and, ultimately, a rip-off. “The first two years, you have all this required coursework that doesn’t transfer anywhere — Evangelism 101, Christian Worldview, and all these bullshit Bible courses, even though you’ve grown up in the church and been steeped in these subjects your whole life...Basically, Walker says, it's a diploma mill."

The value of a Liberty degree, whether earned on campus or online, has always been negligible. In 2017, 41 percent of the university’s graduates were earning less than $25,000 a year. The constant bad publicity of recent years was not going to help. “It’s sad to me that Jerry Jr. keeps ruining my résumé with his political bullshit,” says another alumnus, who worked at the school after graduation.

Andrew Hahn, who started fresh from graduation as a course editor at LUO, was one of them. For a $22,000 salary, his job was to review curricula that had been adapted from Liberty’s campus classrooms for the online offerings. The experience gave him a grim insight into how Liberty was actually run. “Being a student and working there are two completely different things,” Hahn says. “When you’re there in school, on campus, you’re so involved in studying and doing these things that you have to do. You have these professors, many of them are wonderful. You pray before every class. Your friends look out for each other’s well-being. It’s basically a giant Bible camp.” Working there couldn’t have been more different. “Then you see what goes on behind the scenes,” Hahn says. “The values that the school stands for don’t apply to the way the school runs. People are not fairly compensated. The people are pretty much grunt workers; it’s like working at the factory of Liberty.”

This is at least the third time that Pat has predicted the End of Times.

I'm shocked liberty is run like a sweatshop designed to make as much money for the falwell family as possible.

I wonder if a lot of Liberty grads go on to church and missionary jobs that pay diddlysquat

Stunning indictment of evangelical support for Trump by a ultra-conservative evangelical chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary.

https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/policies-persons-and-paths-to-ruin

Actually, this is a long-overdue article attempting to explain why I remain baffled that so many Christians consider the sins of unrepentant sexual immorality (porneia), unrepentant boastfulness (alazoneia), unrepentant vulgarity (aischrologia), unrepentant factiousness (dichostasiai), and the like, to be only toxic for our nation, while policies that endorse baby-killing, sex-switching, freedom-limiting, and socialistic overreach are viewed as deadly.
The reason I put those Greek words in parentheses is to give a graphic reminder that these are sins mentioned in the New Testament. To be more specific, they are sins that destroy people. They are not just deadly. They are deadly forever. They lead to eternal destruction (2 Thessalonians 1:9).

I’m interested to see the response from Catholics to the Pope’s support of gay relationships. Condemning homosexuality and opposing gay marriage has been a major focus and rallying cry for the Catholic Church and many Catholics.

I'm shocked liberty is run like a sweatshop designed to make as much money for the falwell family as possible.

That was exactly my first thought after reading the article - that the Falwells, father and son, have created a huge Evangelical sweatshop in Lynchburg. I was particularly struck by the blunt assessments of the school by former students and employees, many of whom seemed quite bitter. It was also clear that the academics there are mostly crap, and that Little Falwell deliberately lowered the already-mediocre academic quality to increase profits. It's just a devastating article about the school as a whole (Little Falwell's successor as Liberty President is apparently an anti-gay rights minister who has defended both Falwells over the years, so it's unlikely that anything at the school will change. The Board of Trustees has clearly been complicit in all of this, and only replaced Falwell because he had become impossible to defend.)

They really want to dump the idea of separation of (evangelical-christian) church and state because the constitution says "make no law respecting the establishment..."

Thats one of the reasons they are packing the courts.

Little Falwell filed a defamation lawsuit against Liberty U. today. He's suing them for defamation and breach of contract. His statement regarding the lawsuit is a doozy - "Other than God and my family, there is nothing in the world I love more than Liberty University...I am saddened that University officials, with whom I have shared so much success and enjoyed such positive relationships, jumped to conclusions about the claims made against my character, failed to properly investigate them, and then damaged my reputation following my forced resignation." I would think that the actions of Falwell and his wife damaged his reputation more than Liberty officials, but what do I know?

In his statement regarding the lawsuit, Falwell also "says his downfall was cooked up by operatives at the Lincoln Project, a political group dedicated to defeating Trump in the November presidential election. Falwell Jr. has been one of Trump's most loyal evangelical backers." I had no idea that the Lincoln Project had become powerful enough to get Falwell's wife to sleep with numerous younger men (including Liberty students) and to get Jerry to watch.
