Shepard Smith has finally broken his silence after getting canned by Fox News. He spoke at the International Press Freedom Awards ceremony in NYC, and served as the host for the event. Smith said that “Intimidation and vilification of the press is now a global phenomenon. We don’t have to look far for evidence of that...Our belief a decade ago that the online revolution would liberate us now seems a bit premature, doesn’t it?...Autocrats have learned how to use those same online tools to shore up their power...They flood the world of information with garbage and lies, masquerading as news. There’s a phrase for that.” However, he never called out Fox News by name.

You've got to love the language of the GOP Trumpite base. Over and over I've read that one of the things they like about Trump is his "honesty" or that "he tells it like it is." They used to say that about Jesse Helms here in NC - "Ol' Jesse just tells it like it is." What they're really saying, of course, is not that Trump or Helms or Sanders tells the "truth", they most certainly don't, as any fact-check will clearly show, but that they're saying the things they want to hear, and want to believe are the truth, facts be damned. Things like minority women are just "welfare queens", that immigrants are criminals and a drain on the economy, and the constant projection of what the GOP is actually doing onto the Democrats: "We've been found doing something illegal or unconstitutional- it's actually the Democrats that are criminals! We've been shown to be racists - look at Gov. Northam or Robert Byrd, or that black friend or two we've had for years! We've been shown to be misogynists - look at Al Franken or that Lt. Governor of Virginia who hasn't resigned yet! Fox News is completely biased? Well CNN and MSNBC and the failing NY Times are just as biased, and all we've got is Fox to tell us the truth!"
