Bullshit Fox News Says

Another worry is that many of these younger progressive politicians might just eventually say "to hell with it" and leave politics and public life. Being the daily target of death threats and right-wing vitriol generally has to be stressful and exhausting, and you couldn't blame them if they decided to pursue another career away from the spotlight. But it would be a terrible blow to Democrats and the progressive movement generally to lose these young, up-and-coming leaders (and they will be leaders if they stay in politics long enough, which is what terrifies conservatives like Tucker.) I suspect that's one reason why Fox and other right-wing outlets love to hate and attack them so much - it's a way of trying to marginalize them and perhaps get them to leave political life. You know that Tucker and other Fox talking heads would be positively gleeful if the "Squad" or some other progressives just left DC or politics for good.

Maybe. The cynical view is the opposite, that their presence is good for business.

Front and Center on foxnews.... the Caravans are BACK!

You may well be right. I've had the thought that maybe Fox is setting AOC up to be the next Hillary/Pelosi femnazi librul man-hating "wicked witch" for the next few decades. They've certainly made a good living attacking Hillary and Pelosi for years and years. Another possible candidate in that regard is Gov. Gretchen Whitmer up in Michigan. Fox and the Right generally seems to despise her almost as much as Dear Leader himself does.

Caravan of QAnon - white supremacists? Yeah, that's why there are 25k+ national guard in DC right now.

They damn near got Whitmer and AOC killed.

"It is the most vile, venomous assault ever conducted against a president in our country's history, short of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln," Dobbs said in a video of the interview on his Twitter account.

Hmm. I'm sure this has nothing to do with Fox's sharp ratings decline since the election. Fox has lost the ratings battles to CNN and MSNBC since January 4. Since January 4 Fox has averaged 780,000 fewer daily viewers than MSNBC, and 1 million fewer than CNN, which is unprecedented. Even Fox's usually reliable (and ratings powerhouse) primetime Carlson/Hannity/Ingraham lineup has been seriously trailing CNN and MSNBC in the ratings. And according to some news sources part of the reason for this is that Fox is losing viewers to OAN and Newsmax. Desperate times call for desperate measures, I guess.

This article suggests that Fox is losing viewers for five reasons:

1. A historic news cycle—for the competition: Most of the big news stories of the last year, from the pandemic to Trump's election loss to the insurrection are the kinds of things that Fox tends to downplay (at risk of alienating their audience), while CNN and MSNBC were able to provide wall-to-wall coverage.

2. Deemphasizing news department in favor of more opinion programming: Angry white commentary from folks like Glenn Beck, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingraham, and Jeanine Pirro has been Fox's bread and butter for years and years. The news operation was seen as, in effect, an ugly stepchild. And with the news division losing most of its remaining stars (especially Shepard Smith) as well as the one hour of prime time it was allotted, it's become even uglier and even stepchildier (remarkably, that word passes spell check). It now appears that the news, while not the focus, at least differentiated Fox from its competitors. Now, Fox is not especially different from The Blaze, or The Daily Caller, or The Daily Wire, or Breitbart.

3. Opinion programming all-in on conspiracies: For those who embrace conspiratorial thinking, and who can overlook those occasions where someone like Tucker Carlson or Sean Hannity completely changes course (for example, "Dominion voting machines were hacked!" to "Dominion voting machines weren't hacked!") then there's no problem. However, for those who wish to believe that Fox is a serious news outlet committed to the philosophy of "we report, you decide," the conspiracies are awfully difficult to ignore.

4. Outflanked on the fringe right by OAN and Newsmax: For many years, among cable channels, Fox News had an entire crazy right-wing landscape all to themselves, and could decide exactly how crazy they did or did not want to go. Now, it's basically impossible to out-crazy Newsmax and OAN, narrowing Fox's possibilities.

5. Message fatigue, or the "classic rock" problem: There's only so much mileage to be gotten out of Benghazi, or Hillary Clinton's e-mails, or Barack Obama's tan suit. It would appear that, like "Hotel California" or "Stairway to Heaven" after they've been played for the millionth time, the "scandals" of Democrats past have lost a lot of their power.

Fox will likely be back, though. They've been playing this game for a long, long time. I'm sure that once Biden takes office they'll effortlessly switch from defending Dear Leader to framing Biden and Harris as the most evil people to ever serve in government office (at least since Hillary and Obama.)
