Jessie Bates Declares for NFL Draft

He also loses a year of salary coming back. It was the right decision.

That is an NBA decision factor, not an NFL decision factor. NBA guys can play until their skills naturally diminish, which is usually tied to age so they are looking at the same end age regardless of when they start, so it makes sense to start as early as possible. NFL players play until their body gives out, which is generally a length of NFL time not tied to age, and the contracts aren't guaranteed like NBA contracts anyway. NFL careers aren't ending at 27 because the skills are gone. He isn't Tom Brady or Peyton Manning losing a backend year.

I'm not saying that he made a bad decision, just that the year-of-salary argument is irrelevant in the NFL.

So one more year of unpaid college football isn't going to add wear and tear to his body? Granted, it's not the same as the NFL, but that seems like a silly argument.

This is one of the epic good news/bade news stories. It's great news that Jessie got picked in the 2nd Round and gets to live his dream of playing in the NFL and close to his family home. The bad news is he's playing for one of the worst and cheapest owners in the league.

CONGRATS JESSIE!!!!

Financially, Maybe not. A 2nd rounder as a soph. A stellar 2018 in college, and he's a top 2 safety next year? Potential top 15-20 pick. Difference in 6 million signing bonus (at 20) and 1.5 million (at 54).

Great decision by Bates. He gets drafted and lives out his dream. Next year he could get hurt and never get drafted. Going early when you are a talent such as Jesse bates is always the correct decision whether it is as a soph or a junior. 2nd round is awesome and gets him a year closer to the 2nd contract should he pan out & be that good!

For his first contract, it does not matter who the owner is. There is a rookie salary pool allocated to each team which dictates what each pick will make. As the #46 pick, looks like Bates will make just over $1.1 million in his first year: https://overthecap.com/draft/

Now that is a nice payday for what would be a college age senior!

It's not just the first contract. It's the facilities. It's all the comforts. It's the next contract.

As they tell all NFL rookies, "You can live like a king for a couple of years, or you can live like a prince the rest of your life. WATCH YOUR MONEY.

Great advice DEACS76. At the end of the day it appears Mr. Bates made the correct decision. If the numbers on this thread are accurate, Jessie will recieve a $1.5 million signing bonus and a $1.1 million first year contract. Not too shabby. Congrats Jessie, you have made your mom proud.

So any word on Cam or Wolford?

Probably 75-80% of the UDFA contract signings were announced last night. More will be announced today, and maybe a few more tomorrow. No Wake Forest players have been announced among those UDFA deals. Hopefully Serigne gets a spot somewhere.

I'd expect that some of our guys will get tryout where they will attend rookie camps in an effort to get one of the remaining UDFA contracts, but those are very much uphill battles.

Shocked that Cam didn't get at least an UDFA signing.

Maybe he’s weighing multiple offers.

Les retweeted what looks to be a Jacksonville reporter who said John had a few offers and will go to camp with the Jets.

Good for John. He might get a shot when the Jets get tired of Darnold fumbling and throwing picks every 4th play.

When you have a chance to add the quarterback who went into Boone and obliterated the dreams of 30,000 Yosefs by one point at Kidd Brewer Stadium, you do it !
