That is an NBA decision factor, not an NFL decision factor. NBA guys can play until their skills naturally diminish, which is usually tied to age so they are looking at the same end age regardless of when they start, so it makes sense to start as early as possible. NFL players play until their body gives out, which is generally a length of NFL time not tied to age, and the contracts aren't guaranteed like NBA contracts anyway. NFL careers aren't ending at 27 because the skills are gone. He isn't Tom Brady or Peyton Manning losing a backend year.
I'm not saying that he made a bad decision, just that the year-of-salary argument is irrelevant in the NFL.
