Wake Forest Football 2018 Offseason Discussion

Ballsy move, but it gives the Alumni a really meaningful game.

Could have done it for ND or Clemson during the traditional Homecoming time.

Pretty sure it's not all that rare for it to be in early Nov. Buddy who used to work for the school almost guaranteed it was going to be that weekend, as apparently they like to alternate between earlier/later dates every other year to accommodate people who typically have commitments during particular time periods. Plus, November also means less people will have to miss due to weddings.

I checked the last 10 Homecoming dates (2009 to 2018) and the only time it wasn't September to mid-Oct was in 2016 vs. Army on Oct 29. Maybe they're starting to alternate late dates in even years.

Excellent call from Bud. That makes sense.

Had 175 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, three blocked punts, four blocked field goals and one interception as a senior. He also had a lot of production on offense and was a very good punter. Football smarts and excellent student.

Sounds like a Wake Forest type of guy
Should have a great career

Homecoming and the fair used to overlap but it's been a while, not since 2010 it looks like

Place kicker is one spot that one of the incoming freshmen might have to play. However, there are two kickers already on the roster: Ben Brown, (RSo walkon) from the Bullis School and Zach Murphy (Fr, walkon?) from Raleigh Ravenscroft.
Bullis is usually a pretty good team in the MD private school league.
Murphy had 27 touchbacks on kickoffs his senior year and a career long 50 yard FG.

Any reports on whether either of these guys might be able to step in now that Mike Weaver is graduating?

I don’t think we realize how much we will miss Weaver.

Hopefully we really work on our extra point team this spring, however.

Wake has had a number of good place kickers and punters over the last several years. Both Grobe and Clawson seem to feel that is a priority on their teams. A kicker like Weaver means you are a threat to score anytime you get the ball inside the 35 yard line (52 yard FG from there). Opposing defenses have to be very aware of that possibility and that can impact how they play D.

Historically, Wake has had more than it's fair share of excellent kickers and punters. I'm going back to the 70's and Chuck Ramsey. We've had lot's since then, with several All-Americans.
Since Wake has rarely had a powerhouse offense or defense, the kickers and special teams can be a great equalizer or competitive advantage.
For us, using a scholarship or 2 to insure we have quality at these positions makes a lot of sense.

Team being honored for Belk Bowl victory this Saturday vs. Clemson at halftime. Just got a Wake email notifying and advertising lowers for $20 (lol).
