Solo: A Star Wars Story

My definitive rankings are:

TLJ
Rogue One
Force Awakens
Solo

This is mine as well. And all are pretty high rankings. I rewatched Solo recently and enjoyed it even more.

Last Jedi/Solo

I need to watch Solo again. I enjoyed Rogue One and it gets better each time a watch it.

You know, I don't even remember. I just remember being underwhelmed by all the new ones to the point I didn't really care about catching Solo. I thought the performers really elevated the material in this one, rather than just being vessels along for the ride, or something. The humor and lighter moments seemed a little less forced or maybe were just delivered better. But who knows what mood I was in watching Rogue One; that always affects it. I liked that they weren't fighting to save the galaxy in Solo, it was just a light adventure romp.

That makes sense. I similarly enjoyed Rogue One because of its Dirty Dozen vibe, rather than being all about the Jedi and the Force. It was a war movie set in the Star Wars universe. Plus the introduction of new characters and new worlds made the whole thing feel like the kind of uncharted territory I hoped Disney would take the spin-off movies

Recently rewatched the end of Rogue One and it is so well done. The level of tension created even though you know what happens is impressive.

I'm glad they killed everyone off in Rogue One so you wouldn't have them out there lingering or have them reappear in some inane cartoon like they did with Darth Maul and his appearance in Solo.

I really liked Rogue One as well. Not just as a Star Wars movie, but just a good war movie.

Rogue One- Better than anything Star Wars has done since the Original Trilogy
Solo- Ok but forgettable
The Force Awakens - TLJ made this movie much worse
The Last Jedi= Straight Hot Garbage

Now that Rogue One is heavy in the cable TV rotation, I've watched it a few more times. I think it might be my favorite of all the SW movies, not just the new ones. It's not a knock on the original trilogy (although Jedi gets more and more weak every time I watch it), it's just that Rogue One is that good.

I liked it the best of the new films so far, but I did hate the scenes on the crasino planet and I wasn’t a big fan of yoda’s cameo. I’m also ranking it high because of the set-up for the next movie. I reserve the right to re-rank based on the denouement of the series.

I saw it twice in the theater. The second time I fell asleep during the casino scene. But there was a lot that I liked about it- I liked Luke's character, the scene where Kylo and Rey take down Snoke, the battle on Crait, etc

I hated the Rose character in TLJ. She was so annoying and didn’t add anything. Now, many neckbeards felt the same way and bullied her off social media, which is awful and I feel terrible for her. She didn’t deserve that in the least; I just didn’t like the character.

Remind me why you all hated the casino planet? It told us a lot we didn’t know about the Star Wars universe. The Resistance helped people besides themselves and we got a sense of how the Resistance is viewed by people in the lowest rungs of society. And Rose and the stable kids set up the idea anybody can be a hero along with the beautiful ending scene.

Just watched with my kids last night. Completely agree with you on the purpose of the scene -- feels like fluff, but an important explanatory scene.

It’s an altar boy fluff job

Now, shhhhhhhhhh

Let father O’Leary wipe those tears from shoo’s cheeks

R1 is damn near perfect but for CGI Tarkin. In ten years they should be able to make him look human and I welcome a revision to all the CGI humans, even though Leia is not on the screen long enough to be a distraction. Tarkin though... ugh.

I’ve seen Solo a few more times: it’s ok. Just hard to imagine anybody but Ford in that role, even though the guy does a really good job as Solo. I just didn’t care about the underlying romantic storyline. The GOT girl gave a flat performance too.

TLJ was good but marred by Carrie Poppins. There’s just no do over for that.

I didn't find the CGI Tarkin to be that distracting. It was an acceptable solution to a difficult problem. You really couldn't make Rogue 1 without his character.

Watched Solo last night on Netflix. The movie is just too dark, not in theme but literally it is too dark. Some scenes are almost impossible to see what's happening. It was like this in the theater, but I was hoping it was just because I saw it at a crappy theater. But I guess it is intended to be that way because it was the same on TV.

I called R1’s greatness from the beginning

I put it behind the original 3 and maybe ahead of ROTJ

The lighting in Solo was definitely weird. Like, I get that some of it takes place in dingy or dark areas, but there is a way to do that and still have some clarity.

You should see the 4K HDR disc. By nature, HDR content puts out a dimmer picture so that the display can use its processing to use the wider color palette, highlights, and shadow details. Solo with HDR mode off on my projector is a bunch of near-black shapes moving around the screen, and with HDR on, livens up to a bunch of dark, poorly lit, barely colored dreariness. Such a shame, too, because I think I enjoyed the movie itself, just too distracted by the shitty cinematography.
