Republican War on the Poor

Focusing on tax rates solely in a vacuum is nothing but a red herring to distract from our already progressive tax code.

The Top 20% of households fund over 88% of federal income taxes according to the CBO.

This "study" by the NYT is yet another example of the anti-capitalist and "soak the rich" propaganda pushed by many on the left.

lol. The rich already pay too much! Everyone needs "skin in the game!" The rich are the job creators! What about the lady using food stamps to buy chips?!?!?

Same, old, worthless talking points.

brad's parents must have their name on a building at wake

Feel free to move to Venezuela to see first-hand how successful the "power of collective pooling of resources" can be.

No worries... you can still access your WaPo and NYT opinion pieces online via your dialup modem in Caracas.

Education won't help everyone, of course.

Money is taxed, not people. If you have a lot of money, you should pay a lot of taxes.

Brad's understanding of progressive taxation is about as nuanced as his understanding of statistics.

I bet he got this from this dog-whistle conservative site. https://www.atr.org/top-20-households-pay-88-federal-income-taxes-0

he data is shown below:

If you really want to pinpoint the progressivity of federal taxation for the top 20%, the number is right there even in this propaganda if you care to look.

he data is shown below:

The top 20% pays all in federal tax rate of 26.7% compared to 21.1% of all households. Progressive, but not really that much.

And of course this is pre-tax reform.

We're on the same page but it really does grind my gears when I see someone buy 2 cart fulls of Cheetos and Twinkies and other delicious snacks with food stamps and then go drive away in a much nicer car than I have. I know I shared this on the boards in the past but I saw it happen a few years back at a Food Lion. The couple was clearly beating/cheating the system.

How do you know that? Maybe they got the car a few years earlier before experiencing job loss, medical problems, or some other tragedy. Maybe the car was a gift.

I’m sure you got the whole story from that interaction.

This was the same argument used against it last time...There's a better chance of the former than the latter but I will concede you could be correct.

it's not their fault creamy drives a brown '88 nova

its an 03 Prius but point stands.

Lol it is a 16 year old car. 90% of cars on the road are better than that car.

I don’t understand the sentiment some have that to deserve food stamps from MuH tAx DoLlArS you need to appear basically homeless. Meanwhile rich people just got a tax cut for no reason that is costing the country billions and billions in record deficits.

You need to be completely destitute to get food stamps but any corporate farm can get a Trump check.

i believe the Trump farm bailout has now exceeded the cost of the Obama auto bailout. But Trump will never let Merica become a socialist country.

The GOP base is all for socialism - many older Republicans can't wait for that Social Security check and their Medicare benefits - as long as it's not called socialism or welfare and they are the only ones who receive such government goodies. It's giving similar benefits to non-whites, younger folk, city dwellers, the poor, the sick and needy, etc. that they find offensive and love to compare to Venezuelan socialism. As long as its for them, not so much.
