Republican War on the Poor

Save the government money and hurt children. The same ones they want to force you to bring into the world by trying their damndest to end safe and legal abortion and contraception options.

it's about the sanctity of life

Cutting 700,000 people from SNAP cuts about $800M from the economy at less than $100/month/person. In addition to being immoral, this is going to cost thousands of jobs from farmers to truckers to people who unload produce at grocery stores.

Doesn't matter. What matters is sticking it to all the unworthy poors. Gotta make sure they suffer for their poverty and know their place. Even though the majority of the people affected are probably poor whites, I'm sure it will be sold to Trumpites by the GOP as punishing mainly all those minorities and immigrants. Or, in other words, the people "who need to hurt", as the Trumpite lady in Florida who was interviewed for an article once said.

It's also sticking to the rich farmers who sell all those prose and the oil companies who sell all that diesel.

Maybe that's how we should fight it.

There's just no way we can afford it guys

Tilt, you can't believe words or numbers over HRH Trump.

Smart millionaires and billionaires understand that reasonable and necessary trickle up actually is more reliable and sustainable than trickle down.

Nothing is better for business than customers being able to afford the goods and services that enrich owners and stockholders.

Fake news. Cut taxes on corporations and they will invest that mon... can't even say it with a straight face.

Lowest paid workers continue to experience faster wage growth than workers overall:

And this from Atlanta Fed policy adviser John Robertson:

The blue line is the relative median wage of the lowest quartile in the 28 states that increased their minimum wage (23 states introduced new minimum wage levels, and five implemented increases legislated before 2014), and the green line is relative median wage for the states that did not increase their minimum wage. We would expect to see a rise in the relative median wage in the states that raised their minimum wage, and indeed we do. For the group of states that increased minimum wages (the blue line), the relative median wage is now closer to that of states that did not increase their minimum wage (the green line).

Interestingly, though, even in the “no increase” states, the relative median wage has improved, suggesting that the increased tightness of labor markets, or some other factor than hikes in state minimum wages, is playing a role in pushing up the pay for those in lower-wage jobs. Consistent with the message of Chair Powell’s speech, the good news is that there is scope to continue to build on the gains from the long and ongoing expansion for workers at the bottom end of the wage distribution.

There is a lot to unpack in this article. Could have posted in the income inequality thread or other places. I thought it fit here because it is illustrates how rich mostly white people game the system to the direct disadvantage of poor mostly people of color. It also illustrates the difference between rich and poor when they break the rules. 230 families were cheating the system to get their kids into this school and got caught red handed and the collective response was a less than a shrug. Contrast that with the vast universe of rules that a poor person has to navigate to get food stamps, housing aid, or unemployment benefits. Breaking any of those rules means your family doesn't eat or have a roof, and may get you arrested.

Good article that explains the downside of magnet schools.

Republicans: real solutions to imaginary problems. Oh, and vice versa.
