OFFICIAL 2018 MLB PLAYOFFS Thread (Cubs free)

Even at 79-34 (.699), the Sox have to finish 37-12 (.755) to match the 2001 Mariners. 116 wins is just insane.

The Red Sox current pace of .700 gets them to 114 wins.

Team win % in baseball is usually in the .600 - .400 range. Anything outside that is outstanding (good or bad) in a given year. AL has three teams above .600 and three below .400. A lot of spread.

NL has no team above .600 and only one (the Padres at .398) just barely below .400.

The game becomes really not fun when wins are few like in Baltimore and KC, both flirting with historically bad seasons, barely above .300.

Like clockwork, all star Matt Kemp giving a few months of great first half hitting all back in a hurry.

It should be a fun run to the end - lots of races still up for grabs. Pretty much every race except AL East and AL Central should come down to the wire.

Dodgers in deep shit with Janzen out indefinitely. Bullpen has blown last 4 games with lead heading to 8th/9th.

Nats in a similar spot as their bullpen has failed to hold leads in their last 3 losses. Difference between being 4 out versus 7 out. With Doolittle and Herrera both on the DL, Nats hopes almost gone (even though their lineup has finally started to produce as expected) as the Nats literally have not one reliable arm to get late inning outs. Bullpen is the great unknown heading into every season, as it is the reason why some pre-season favorites have struggled (Nats and Dodgers) and a big reason why this year's biggest surprise (the A's and the smallest payroll in the sport) has played so well.

Dodgers only hope is going with Caleb Ferguson who has been good when given the ball or some unknown that comes up in September and makes a surprise contribution. We blew another one last night although when Wood left the game was tied.

RIP Nats 2018 season. It's a good thing Davey brought camels to spring training to help us get over the hump:

The Mets scored 40 total runs in two games, which means they're 100% going to get shutout during deGrom's next start.

Daniel Murphy to the Cubs. Matt Adams to the Cardinals. Nats have raised the white flag.

Inevitable "fuck you" win for the Natties in smoking the Phillies last night. If they sweep - which is entirely possible given they're throwing Strasburg and Scherzer in the next two - they're still on the fringe of the WC race. I assume they have plenty of H2H games against both PHL and Atlanta. Meanwhile, it sure seems like the Phillies have no idea how to be in a pennant race.

Phillies have a lot of young players and a rookie manager. Very little pennant race experience in that clubhouse.

It would be typical baseball karma for the Nats to go on a little run as soon as they decide to raise the white flag and sell. After the Phillies series, the Nats play the Mets over the weekend and then back to Philly where Strasburg and Scherzer will be lined up to pitch again. That said, the bad losses to the Marlins and the back-breaking walk-off grand slam loss to the Cubs will end up costing the Nats the chance to legitimately contend, but I could see the Nats damaging the Phillies hopes.

Yeah, Nats are in perfect position schedule wise to keep the Phillies from winning the division, or even making the playoffs as a wildcard team.

A's and Astros only play three more times this season. A's are closer to the AL West division lead than the first wild card, but they go H2H against NYY in early Sept. It's possible for the A's (or Astros) to overtake the Yankees for the first WC slot, although NY has 7 games against Baltimore, as well as series against Detroit and the White Sox still on their schedule. They have six against Boston, but by that point, the Red Sox will probably be resting people with expanded rosters.
