RIP Rusty Staub

One of the first players I recall seeing from my first baseball games attended -- Forbes Field against my Pirates.

Au revoir, Grand Orange

Was watching the Mets last Spring game on Sunday and Mets color man Keith Hernandez said he had visited Rusty the night before. Said he was doing much better and was upbeat during Keith's visit. Obviously Rusty took a rapid turn for the worst over the last couple days.

RIP

No one choked the bat like Rusty!

Le Grand Orange will be missed. He seemed to be a universally liked as respected guy.

Talk about a pure hitter...

RIP Rusty

I only remember Staub as a pinch hitting specialist for the Mets who choked up on the bat like a little leaguer so I was surprised to learn that in his prime he once had a 30 HR season and a 29 HR season.

Rusty was one of those very, very good players who never quite hit superstar status. But those guys are critical to teams having success. They are team guys and solid contributors, like Rusty was for so many years. It was a sad day when he retired. It is sadder still now that he is gone.

RIP, Rusty.

Sorry to hear this. Remember when he broke his collarbone against the wall trying to make a catch.

He was a true pro. LET'S GO METS!

I saw Rusty Staub play for the Durham Bulls right here on what is now known as David Couch Park. It was pretty much a foregone conclusion that he would make MLB.

And 23 years is a long career playing pro baseball.

A great hitter with one of the great nicknames in baseball. R.I.P.

As an aside, anyone else think that baseball was better when there was a plethora of nicknames (even before Berman)? I don't follow the sport as much now as I did back in day so maybe I'm just not aware of the current ones.

I'm pretty sure that Rusty's manager at Durham was none other than Clint (Scrap Iron) Courtney, the wire rimmed glasses wearing former big league catcher.

Fun stat: He had 500 hits with 4 different teams. I ate dinner at his restaurant in NYC. In 1984 with the Mets, 3rd base coach Bobby Valentine would send Rusty home from 2nd base on a hit to the out field. He was always out by 20 feet.

Saw Rusty as an unknown player in an old Carolina league game, first at bat he hit a frozen rope over the first baseman’s head that did not drop a foot until it hit the 330 marker on the wall, ball rebounded to the first baseman ten yards onto the grass, stand up triple. My thought, did he get lucky. Second at bat hit the exact same shot to the same 330 mark in right field for another stand up triple. I realized this guy had it and would not be down here long. RIP Rusty

I am from Durham, and my dad had season tickets to the Bulls. I remember him when I was a kid. Everyone knew he was special and was going to play one day in the bigs. RIP Rusty.
