Barbara Bush, former US First Lady, has a life threatening illness, but is no longer under active medical treatment for it. She is only receiving "comfort care."

Got to meet her while on vacation many years ago. I just took a chance and started talking. I wouldn't call her "sweet", but she was chatty and opinionated as hell. Very direct and informal, but she didn't mind chatting up a nobody stranger like me.

Hopefully she is not in pain. Godspeed.

Apparently all her current medical treatment now is simply for pain management. She is reported to have requested that all medical efforts to stop or reverse her disease cease.

Barbara Bush has passed away.

Barbara Bush died today. She was 92.

Condolences and prayers to all her family and friends.

When questioned by Diane Sawyer as to whether or not Barbara Bush watched news leading up to the invasion of Iraq in 2003:
"I watch none. He [former President Bush] sits and listens and I read books, because I know perfectly well that, don’t take offense, that 90 percent of what I hear on television is supposition, when we’re talking about the news. And he’s not, not as understanding of my pettiness about that. But why should we hear about body bags, and deaths, and how many, what day it’s gonna happen, and how many this or what do you suppose? Or, I mean, it’s, it’s not relevant. So, why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that? And watch him suffer."

She was the 2001 Wake Commencement speaker. Last Wake Commencement I attended. Godspeed. Thoughts and prayers to her family.

this fresno state professor has stirred it up with her comments....

hopefully the pitchfork crowd can either a) muster up a good mob to go run her out of her job, or b) show some self-awareness next time a republican says something inflammatory. Not counting on either.
There's no self-awareness. The very same pitchforkers are currently defending freedom of speech when it comes to asshole right-wing Marquette professor and conservative blogger John McAdams for calling out by name in his blog a graduate student teaching assistant in another department over an incident about gay marriage in her class.

They also adore freedom of speech hero Canadian graduate student Lindsay Shepherd for refusing in class to acknowledge non-binary gender identities in her class.

While I personally find it in bad taste to publicly talk shit about someone on the day they die (and then to also publicly taunt those who call for your dismissal by bragging about your tenure protections and salary), people in general are total fucking hypocrites.

I'd separate Lindsay Shepherd from the other 2 assholes but yeah free speech is free speech. I do believe there should be consequences for bad judgment but I do not want people's free speech taken away either.

This seems to be similar to the porn argument...when you see something that's blatantly ignorant/offensive/out of line, then you know it. Seems like this prof is toeing that line. I have to question her judgment in making such statements on a public forum. I would love to see her shit canned because I'm really offended by her but she's got the right to be a total "rhymes with rich" in Bar's terms. So if she stays, she stays - long live the Constitution.

People get hysterical and offended quite easily these days. One would think that one would have some awareness about what one says on social media anymore, but a look at your own social media threads will tell you that is not the case. Generally speaking, people should not lose their jobs or businesses because they offend a group of people. This is a trend that I wish would stop. I wish somebody would just say, "You know what? Fuck you. I don't care if you're offended. Get over yourself. Quit trying to destroy lives because we disagree on an issue."

yeah, totally:

Tennessee lawmakers punish Memphis for removing statue of Confederate and KKK leader

The Republican-dominated House voted to remove $250,000 earmarked for the Memphis bicentennial next year after the city engineered a way to remove that statue in December, along with a statue of Confederate president Jefferson Davis. The amendment was adopted in a $37.5 million spending bill still working its way through state chambers for approval.

It is a circle of nonsense, meaning one group's offense offends another group, resulting in actions by all of the offended. In the end, 1/3 are initially offended, the other 1/3 offended by the offended's actions, and the 2/3rds of people that allow themselves to be offended have taken actions to make themselves feel better at the expense of the 1/3 who don't give a shit.

i mean, if you think KKK supporters deserve the same level of empathy as non-KKK supporters, i think that's on you, brother.

Facepalm for the TN Legislature

Clowns need to let that Confederate stuff go...leave stuff in museums but no need to leave a monument up when it causes people pain.

right, because you get offended when someone points out that it's pretty gross to claim to be ambivalent about everything when really you just want the right to be dick
