He played before most of you were born. He took jumpers for his FTs (shot 80% for his career). When the NBA put together their Top 50 of All Time, Greer was included without ever making 1st Team All-NBA. Well, it was kinda hard to make 1st Team when Oscar and West were around.

He was so smooth that you'd say, "what did he do tonight?" Then you'd look up and he'd have 20 almost every night and not remember how he got them.

His 15-19' J was a thing of beauty.

RIP

Thanks for the sad note. Another great one from yesteryear gone. He probably would have been first team all NBA except for being contemporary with two of the greatest all time at his position. He, as did they, played without the three point line, so he probably would have had higher scoring numbers if the three had been available. He was good at "letting the game come to him."

RIP, Hal.

Probably the most beloved alum from Marshall. There is a Hal Greer Boulevard in Huntington. Not many college athletes get that sort of recognition. RIP, Hal.

Wellman also ran Hal Greer out of town. The same baseball coach who won three ACC championships. RIP

Greer with Wali Jones, Wilt, Chet Walker, Luke Jackson and Matt Goukas were a terrific team

You forgot Billy C. That team could play today. They may be the greatest team ever.

They also had three of the weirdest but excellent FT shooters of all time. Wali Jones, Hal Greer and Dave Gambee were each unique. Hal took a jumper. Gambee shot underhand and moved his back foot up as he shot. Wali also moved his leg as he shot.

Expansion (and free agency) definitely changed the NBA. Now those guys likely would be spread over 4 to 5 teams.

fusion, you might know Paxon Hollow Golf Course in Broomall. We used to see Hal Greer playing there. He was a much better bball player. :)

Talent stayed much more concentrated in those days. Players could not legally go look for a contract with another team, they had to stay with the team that drafted them unless traded or released.

Free agency rules today mean that the concentration of talent that the Celtics had is extremely unlikely to be repeated.

As a kid growing up in Huntington, WV, I saw virtually every home game Hal Greer played at Marshall. He graduated from the then, all-black, Douglas High School and was the first man of color to play at Marshall in 1955. He and Leo Byrd paired in the backcourt and they were the two smoothest shooters I ever saw. They played hard and made it look effortless. Great memories.

Very sorry to hear this news. I loved to watch him play, and that era of the NBA was so much better than now. RIP to free throw jump shot man!
