Jerusalem Embassy Opening Going Well

So amazing that the Romans couldn't foresee that a wall across the land of the northern frontier wouldn't prevent invasions from sea. So advanced, yet so dumb.

Yeah, it kept the Celts in what is now Scotland from raiding across the border, at least for awhile (it didn't permanently stop them, of course). It didn't stop invasions from elsewhere, though, so in that sense it did provide a false sense of security. You could argue that the Romans in Britain would have been better off to have provided more defenses for southern Britain instead of spending so many resources building up a wall in the north. Even many medieval castles were ultimately taken (or just starved into submission). I also forgot to mention the great Maginot Line built by the French after WWI to stop another German invasion. It was worse than useless - the Germans simply went around it via Belgium and the Ardennes Forest, and over it with the Luftwaffe. #wallsaresoeffective

except for that one teensie part about owning some land

Which was a nation thousands of years before the US or any western nation existed. That doesn't mean most Jews agree with Bibi's crazy settlements or having two states.

But Trump and Republicans think having a wall would cause Mexicans and others from Central America to throw up their hands and quit trying to enter America. After all, there are no flights (which cost less than border coyotes) to the US from south of the Rio Grande.

you should probably not use Hadrian's wall as an example of a failure as it seems to have done its job during its time.

It may have been more successful than the others, at least for awhile, so I'll let it go. The point still stands, though, that the great majority of walls don't work over time. If the GOP wants to argue that building a border wall with Mexico will somehow magically cure our immigration issues, let them. I just don't think that argument stands up well historically.

Why not just put a bunch of gators in the Rio Grande ?

not to belabor the point but it's easy when you compress time to say things don't work over time but in that case we're talking a wall that worked for like 350 years.

Which is longer than our Constitution !

Hadrian was generally regarded as a tax and spend emperor.

It's also easy not to consider the difference in eras. What worked for Hadrian or others in the distant past won't work today.

people in this thread seem really fucking confused about what a physical wall does and does not do

Well, there were also thousands of Roman soldiers along the wall. Our wall would be a lot better than that wall. If we build a modern wall and we put soldiers on it and shot those who approached without authorization, it ought to work really well.

There were zero reasons to use deadly force yesterday. Hamas was at a distance with an electrified barrier. Bibi's orders were despicable.
