Supreme Court Declares PASPA Unconstitional (Sports Betting Is On The Way)

Nice. I assume the President will not stand in its way (like Marijuana) as he will prosper from the ruling.

Former casino magnate (aka failure) Donald Trump opposing legalized sports gambling? Not a chance.

Will this lead to overturn the anti-online poker gambling law?

If so, will palma ever leave his living room again?

My dream scenario would be a classy sports book / restaurant in downtown Raleigh. I'd be there for every Panthers game.

ETA: actually, every football game

Seems like the expansion of gambling is exactly the type of thing that Trump would oppose. It would increase competition for his casinos.

It would also potentially allow him to put sports books in more states, right?

There are a couple of bar/restaurants in SoCal that have OTB/racebooks in them. Due to laws, the gambling parts must have special entries and security. The rebuilding of the venues will be very expensive because of security concerns. They will have to be over 21 properties at all times.

I imagine that sportsbooks will have higher priced food and drinks due to people staying long periods of time and not necessarily buying food/booze all through the games. Tables will likely not turnover as often. As opposed to regular casinos and racebooks, there is must less repetitive action at sportsbooks.

Two groups that will benefit from sportsbooks are cops and lawyers. With people staying two, three, five hours, I bet there will be more DUIs and more lawyers to defend those picked up.

First pro team to be embroiled in a point-shaving or other gambling-related scandal?

I worked on a congressional campaign in Alabama in 2010 where the Dem candidate for governor built his platform on bringing the education lottery to Alabama. Republicans crucified him as an immoral man hellbent on breaking families and wrecking homes.

Fast-forward to 2018: Biff Tannen is president, and not only is the education lottery part of the Republican gubernatorial candidate's platform this year, but a conservative supreme court decides sports gambling is legal nationwide, by a 6 - 3 vote no less. That means a conservative supreme court justice could have kept the moral high ground by voting no, but instead apparently thought "Screw it, that ship has sailed." I agree with the ruling btw, I just find it interesting given the climate.

Imagine playing #17 at Sawgrass and some guy has a $100 that you will hit it in the water. Just as you commence your swing he screams out as loud as he can?

When betting on golf shots becomes rampant, crowd control will become a huge, perhaps unmanageable problem. PGA players will have to contend with lots of noise. It will not be the same game.

Golf tournaments are already noisy as hell and #17 at Sawgrass is no exception. $100 bet isn't even going to cover what a day on the course costs.

Those kind of bets aren't made at sportsbooks.

Yep. Education lotteries are a crock though.

The pro leagues could diminish the casinos by taking bets themselves. They could have websites like TVG and Xpressbet have for horse race betting.

I could see franchises drawing more interest from casual fans but how could they open up more revenue streams while maintaining the integrity of the game? How do leagues keep officials from making bets when it’s even easier to make bets?

I think the lesser leagues would even get a bigger bump because they could feasible draw new fans.
