    Unless Indian River County sheriff’s deputies made a major mistake, Jamal Riggins' amazing comeback effort to get an education and play college football at the highest level has been sacked.

    It’s rare and sad to see such stories, highlighted by his arrest Tuesday on first-degree murder, five counts of attempted murder and other charges related to a drive-by shooting April 20 that killed a Fort Pierce teenager in Gifford.

    Sebastian River High School football fans rooted for Riggins, 19, of Vero Beach, a defensive leader on two of the Sharks' best seasons in 2015 and 2016. But not even one of the nation's top prospects has infinite opportunities when the courts are involved.

    As a junior, Riggins committed in February 2016 to play at Wake Forest University. At the time, he’d rejected more than 15 other offers, including those from such powerhouses as Louisiana State and Southern California...

    He was also accused of having sex with a 14 year old when he was 18, "in the team room after being ejected from a football game." He served 13 months in prison as part of a plea deal.

    “He wouldn’t have got this plea agreement if he didn’t impress people — other than this event — being a good kid,” Garland said. “He was a star athlete, and he might still be some day.”
