2018 NCAA National Tennis Championship Thread

Really great performance by the guys today. Credit to Coach Bresky for having them ready to go. Always fun to beat Illinois - their crowd and bench players were pretty feisty today... really fun to shut them up 4-0. Hopefully I never have to hear the "I-L-L" ... "I-N-I" chant for the rest of my days.

In your face Ayo Dosunmu!! You should have gone to a real tennis school.

Also great move by Bresky to have Seraphim at 6. Seems like most of the guys that play 5 and 6 are interchangeable so you can play a bit of a match up game there.

Also, anyone know about streaming options for the match tomorrow? Won’t be able to get off work for it.

All the matches are streamed with the link on the Wake website

All courts have had a live stream this week.

Just looking at rankings, A&M is the only team that stacks up with the Deacs. They have #s 5, 12, 48, and 72 in the National rankings.

Wake is at #s 4, 7, 38, and Bar (clearly rank worthy).

UCLA and tOSU do not have 2 top 40 players. Wake beat UCLA 4-2 in the indoor finals after losing the doubles point and Gojo was about to start the 3rd set against the #1 player in the nation from the Bruins.

The Deacs looked really good today. We won at 1 and 3 doubles and were up a break at 2 doubles.

The guy Gojo was playing (Vucik) is currently ranked #442 in the world (on the ATP tour). He beat Gojo badly in the first set and was up 2-0 in the second, and then Gojo rallied. Gojo was playing incredibly well when the match was stopped and was up 3-1 in the third set.

Petros lost the first set but then cranked it up another gear and was cruising. No doubt in my mind he would have won that match. He can play at such a high level.

Skander was fantastic today. He dominated Hiltzik and fought off several break points with some huge serves.

Bar was solid, as always.

Gadjiev was playing well at 5. He's really a wildcard in that he can play at a really high level and then he can lose some he shouldn't. His opponent (Clark) had very few losses this year.

Seraphim at 6 was great. He was in control of that match from start to finish.

Tomorrow the women's semifinals are will start at 10 AM and the men's semifinals at 2 PM. The weather isn't looking great, so that could change. Wake plays TAMU starting at 2 PM.

TAMU is really good. Their #1, Patrick Kypson, is a freshman from North Carolina. He was the top American recruit this past year, he enrolled in January, and many expect him to go pro after this season. He's good, but beatable. He has a bit of a bad reputation. Earlier this year he lost a testy match to an Ohio State player (JJ Wolf) and when Kypson went to the net to shake hands he spit into his own hand before the attempted shake (Wolf pulled his hand away). There's video online, if you're interested.

Arthur Rinderknech used to play #1 for TAMU but Kypson took his spot when he signed. He's also a really good player at #2. Two years ago Skander was playing him in the NCAA singles tournament and was up 3-0 in the third set, when Rinderknech lost his cool, said a bunch of stuff, threw a bunch of stuff, and was disqualified from the match.

The TAMU guys are stilled pissed about losing to LOWF in the Belk Bowl.
They'll be even more upset after losing to us again in tennis today.

Thanks. I was hoping there would be a WatchESPN broadcast since it's the final four (I don't like having to switch courts over and over).

Ish is correct that if you go purely by rankings (which apparently aren't always the best indicator) A&M appears to be a much tougher opponent than OSU or UCLA. A&M shows 3 ranked doubles teams while UCLA and OSU have just 2 (granted one A&M player shows up on 2 of their ranked double teams) and has a lot more ranked single players, so today could effectively be the championship if you believe rankings are useful at all.

Add in the fact A&M knocked off Florida who we lost to earlier in the year (granted that was without one of our top doubles players and likely 5/6 singles in Christian), but clearly we are going to have to bring our A game to win today.

Any thoughts on how playing indoors might favor the Deacs or the Aggies???

Is the weather still shitty in Winston? why aren't we playing outdoors?

Or was that just a hypothetical?

One of the Illinois players was Vuk Budic who originally committed to Wake.

hypothetical only. Women are playing outdoors currently and weather shows clear until 2pm, but then show 30-50% of thunder showers from 2-4. Hopefully forecast is wrong as it has been most of the weekend.

Yes, though he wasn't a top 6 player for Illinois and didn't play in the match yesterday.

Indoors might favor the Deacs a bit against A&M. Usually indoor play favors the northern teams, so perhaps Ohio State would receive the most benefit from playing indoors. However, Ohio State did lose to UCLA this year at the national indoor tournament, so who knows.

weather now showing good until 4pm, so hopefully all will work for outdoors and only takes us an hour plus to clean up.

this one could be hairy. lots of what look like toss-ups — real tough matchups for petros and botzer which i usually count as gimmes. looks like their #6 stinks though. hoping for dubs, petros, botzer, dirk.
