2018 NCAA National Tennis Championship Thread

It will be interesting to see if we are favorites considering doubles will not be as strong. Maybe we get a couple doubles specialists in the fall...

Petros has marched through the fall singles national championships in AZ and will play in the finals today at ~ 3 PM. It will be on ESPN3. Yesterday Petros destroyed the #8 player in the country, 6-1, 6-2. Petros is the GOAT.

Petros wins first set 6-4, winning the last three games

Petros was asked about winning the individual national championship. He said at the end of the final match he didn't celebrate the win over Gojo because "the biggest accomplishment was walking on the court with my teammate, my friend" He went on "I didnt care which one of us won, it was a team effort that got us both there. Most of the time when you make it to the final, it is an individual accomplishment, but I felt like Borna helped me get to that point"

Surprised at how little he celebrated after winning Sunday.

Also this is the first I’ve seen him play live since the natty. Seems like he’s completely rebuilt his service motion. It was hard to tell with the wind if it was more or less effective. Just thought it was odd.

He served that way in the summer of 2017 too. Apparently it was because of an abdominal injury. I think the injury may have reoccurred this summer, and he served that way all summer and this fall.

Lots of signals that Gojo may be back this spring. If so, Wake would be favorites to repeat.

Was thinking the same. + a likely addition in the Spring. We could be better this year than last in singles, while being weaker in doubles if I’m keeping track of everything correctly.

What is the bottom of the lineup expected to look like? Has anyone separated themselves after Gojo, Chrysochos and Botzer?

I read on another site that we signed Siddhant Banthia, the number 1 junior in India. If true, he'll play top 6, for sure. Melios Efstathiou, a freshman from Cyrus, also looks to be top 6 player. Other options include Julian Zlobinsky, Eduardo Nava, Rrezart Cungu, Alan Gadjiev, etc. Basically, we're loaded.

Good point by CD1 that doubles could be weaker. It's hard t replace Mansouri and Seraphim, who may have been the two best doubles players in the country last year. Plus, Ian Dempster was a really good doubles player.

Where did you read that about Banthia? I had heard that he was coming in January, but haven't seen it printed anywhere. I agree that it is likely that he would play top 6 alongside Gojo, Petros, Melios, and Bar, but always hard to tell how freshman will respond to the dual match atmosphere. Hopefully he can grab hold of the 5 spot, then I'd think we'd be looking at a committee approach like we had last year unless one of the guys you named steps up. We've got great depth in spot 6-10, BUT to win another natty we need someone to own 6. Cungu has good experience, but big hitters overpower him on hard courts. Nava and Gadjiev both played well 2 years ago at TCU and Wake respectively, but were up and down last year. Zlob and Solomon are just so darn inconsistent. Yuval has some HUGE wins, but also some bad losses. Bresky may elect to play the matchup game.

I agree with all of this, though we did win the championship last year without a solid #6 player.

For sure, and it is absolutely possible, but our 3 spot will be down and dubs is going to take a hit. Skan was a Sr. All American playing in that spot. Skan, Dempster, and Dirk had to be among the top 10 dubs players in the country last year. I'd probably say Skander was the best dubs player in college. Once Dirk was back healthy and playing singles we were much better. My hope is that Banthia can help at 5, and Cungu can play 6.

Skan #468 Dirk #530 Demp #691 in latest ATP dubs rankings. They should all move up a lot when they play more next year!
