Family Separation at the Border: US citizens are now being detained

“Snowflake”

Arizona State Senator Sylvia Allen, a Republican from the small town of Snowflake, expressed concern at a recent GOP event that the United States is "going to look like South American countries very quickly," claiming that new immigrants will not be able to "assimilate."

What's so absurd about that argument is that the exact same argument was made in earlier time periods about the Irish and German Catholic immigrants in the 1850s, and yet they assimilated, and about all those immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe in the late 1800s and early 1900s. There was just no way those swarthy Italians (who were all anarchist terrorists and mobsters, you know) would ever assimilate into American society and culture. And yet they did, and did so to the point that many of their descendants are now the ones calling for this new wave of immigration to be ended because this current batch will never assimilate. They were wrong then, and they're wrong now.

It’s not that absurd. Those people were European so it was easy to eventually welcomed as whites. A generation or two of intermarriage wiped that out. The same people will always think of non-whites as lesser than them, therefore unable to “assimilate.”

Obviously assimilation shouldn’t be a goal. People shouldn’t have to give up their culture and be subservient to white American culture to be Americans.

Italians and lots of other Southern Europeans weren't regarded as "white" back then - they were portrayed as darker-skinned and inferior to those of "Northern European stock." The language used to portray immigrants then and now is strikingly similar. I'm not saying that people need to give up their culture - lots of older immigrant groups have kept many of their traditions, and culture, and language and so forth - but rather that they will become loyal American citizens like everyone else, and not the terrorists intent on undermining the country from within, as nativists have portrayed immigrants in different time periods. "White American Culture" is actually pretty diverse in and of itself.

And that’s why racism and xenophobia are important ways to maintain that diverse coalition of white Americans.

ACLU: U.S. has taken nearly 1,000 child migrants from their parents since judge ordered stop to border separations

Lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union told a federal judge Tuesday that the Trump administration has taken nearly 1,000 migrant children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border since the judge ordered the United States government to curtail the practice more than a year ago.

In a lengthy court filing in U.S. District Court in San Diego, lawyers wrote that one migrant lost his daughter because a U.S. Border Patrol agent claimed that he had failed to change the girl’s diaper. Another migrant lost his child because of a conviction on a malicious destruction of property charge with alleged damage of $5. One father, who lawyers say has a speech impediment, was separated from his 4-year-old son because he could not clearly answer Customs and Border Proection agents’ questions.

More than 40 percent of the separated children were five years old or younger. Children spent nearly four months in federal custody, on average, in part because it was difficult for lawyers and case workers to locate their parents and assess the reason they were separated.

“DHS officials with no child welfare expertise are making split-second decisions, and these decisions have traumatic, lifelong consequences for the children and their families,” Nagda said in her testimony.

Jesus Christ. People need to be held accountable for this.

The GOP (and especially the Trump Administration) has apparently decided to just ignore at least some court rulings and orders, and basically dare judges to do anything about it. They're doing the same with the Democrats in the House - just ignore subpoenas and requests for documents and testimony. They're basically giving the middle finger to any other branch of the government that overrules them and daring them to actually do something serious about it. And so far they're getting away with it. And their base loves it. It's like Andrew Jackson simply ignoring the Supreme Court decisions regarding seizing the Cherokee's land and moving them west. His supporters loved it - and the Cherokee suffered.

This is the intersection of the NC corruption and migrant threads. I'll just put it here.
