Family Separation at the Border: US citizens are now being detained

Agreed. If the economy doesn't perk up by the fall and Trump can't hang his campaign MAGA hat on that anymore, the only thing he and the GOP have left is their tried-and-true culture war issues to fire up the rural and suburban white base, and running on racial/xenophobic fears. Given the people he now has surrounding him as advisers, no doubt that's what they'll go with, probably in more direct and blunt ways than we've seen in a presidential campaign in decades.

Why couldn’t he campaign on making America great again? He probably has to scrap the “keep America great” line, but the red hats still work.

most of my friends who like Trump are none of these things, they just live in a rural area

In general I see most Trump supporters fall into two categories:

1) Those that see America as fundamentally white, Christian, and heteronormative. Any departure from these identities being centered and given preference feels like an attack on them and their way of life. They want to vote to preserve “American values,” which are defined as preference for those aforementioned identities. Brings to mind the saying: “To those accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression.”

2) the “How’s your 401k?” crowd. This group views everything through their own personal financial situation, assuming everyone lives in a similar financial situation as they do. They are generally the section of society for whom what person (or party) holds the presidency doesn’t really matter. They may lack empathy, but more likely are sheltered from lives outside the middle or upper class with little understanding of how policies affect others.

I would say group #2 doesn't assume everyone lives in a similar financial situation they do. They do assume everyone could if they worked hard enough.

Immigrant detainees say ICE is using coronavirus disinfectant sprays that cause bleeding, burns and pain

Safety guidelines for HDQ Neutral issued by its manufacturer, Spartan Chemical, warn that the disinfectant is “harmful if inhaled” and that it “causes severe skin burns and serious eye damage.” The guidelines specify that HDQ Neutral should be used “only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area” and protective gear should be worn while handling the chemical.

According to the complaint about Adelanto, which is one of the country’s largest ICE detention centers, staff there are spraying HDQ Neutral “every 15-30 minutes” on surfaces throughout the housing unit, which lacks ventilation. The complaint said “at least nine” detainees have experienced severe symptoms from the spray since May 11, including blisters, rashes, bleeding, fainting, breathing difficulties, headaches, stomach pain and nausea. Multiple detainees complained of receiving inadequate care for these symptoms.

“Many of us are very allergic to the substance that they have been spraying. It causes rashes and there is one man with blisters … They spray it on the phones, chairs, tables, every 15-20 minutes - all day & all night long,” said one of the detainees quoted in the complaint.

“There is no fresh air to breathe in the room. The guards have masks & gloves so don't seem bothered by it but many of us have very red eyes, sore throats, and headaches."
