Family Separation at the Border: US citizens are now being detained

Good article on the human cost of Trumpism, but I'm not so sure that I agree that "only now" can we understand the cost and cruelty of what Trump is doing. There were plenty of people who warned in the 2016 campaign of what Trump and his followers would try to do if they were elected, and others who warned where Trump and his cronies were going when they started this policy right after he took office. They were ignored (at least by most of the news media and nearly all Republicans) and so here we are. Part of the story of Trump is one in which lots of people tried to warn what would happen if he was elected POTUS, and just enough people ignored them to put him in office anyway. But it's not as if anything he's done since January 2017 is a surprise or a shock, or at least it shouldn't be. It's what happens when you elect a totally unqualified and inexperienced reality-show TV star who lacks any human empathy or ability for personal growth whatsoever, who treats others merely as tools or objects subject to his whims, to be discarded as needed with no sense of loyalty, who has no moral or ethical conscience whatsoever, and who, as his own biographer repeatedly stated in 2016, has spent his entire adult life doing whatever the hell he wants with no repercussions or consequences, and operates like a classic mob boss.

Since January 2017, we've had unprecedented levels of corruption, a bumbling foreign policy that has alienated and baffled our allies and sucked up to dictators that he personally admires, and no concern whatsoever for Constitutional rules and norms that have kept our Republic together for generations. He's spent his entire adult life vindictively and pettily going after anyone who dares to criticize or oppose him, and by nature he is a divider and hater, not a unifier. There isn't a dignified or generous bone in his body. And for anyone who disagrees, please explain his behavior since he took office. As long as he is POTUS, the cruelty will continue, not only towards immigrants, but anyone who gets in his way. And now that he's finally driven away anyone in his administration who is even tepidly or timidly willing to privately stand up to him, and surrounded himself with sycophants and fellow nutcases like Barr and Miller and Mulvaney, there is nothing and no one to stop him except Congress. And as Congressional Republicans are now part of his cult, it means they aren't going to stop him either. So, here we are.

Sure. But her emails. Trump was the lesser of two evils.

Yes, but it just gets old reading articles and statements from people who still act as if they're surprised or shocked or "disturbed" by anything Trump & Company are doing. There was plenty of warning, people either chose not to listen, or as you said, just rationalized it all away.

Speaking of the Berlin Wall, I was watching Tom Brokaw recount his experience of reporting on the fall of the Berlin Wall yesterday and he told this incredible story I had no idea happened.

Long story/short - an East German stooge was given a statement to read in a press conference following some protests. In the statement there was a change in policy on border crossings (basically gave East Germans the ability to obtain passports and travel out of the East but with a lot of restrictions still) which he interpreted as a complete opening of the borders effective immediately. Following the statement, East Berliners started to cross and others started taking down the wall.

My favorite 2 comments from that tweet string.

1. The Berlin Wall was built by a Russian regime that hated America.

2. Just like the current administration.

My favorite part is seeing that Simply Red is not only touring but playing a 15,000 seat arena.

The prospect of flu outbreaks was a growing concern. The CBP had rejected a recommendation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that it vaccinate migrants, saying such a program was impractical and complex. Amid the crowding, Border Patrol agents, trained in law enforcement, had reluctantly stepped into care-taking roles.

If Carlos had made it to an HHS shelter, he likely would have been vaccinated for the flu, a standard procedure in HHS shelters. But when HHS finally found a bed for him, the agency postponed his relocation because he had the flu and was not fit to travel.

Gonzalez’s treatment report also said Carlos should “return to medical office in 2 hrs or sooner” and should be taken to an emergency room if his symptoms persisted or worsened. There is no record of further medical treatment over the next 19 hours in the records obtained by ProPublica. Gonzalez didn’t respond to an inquiry from ProPublica.

Carlos was not sent to an emergency room or other outside medical facility. Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, the vice dean for public health practice and community engagement at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, said basic monitoring of Carlos should have provided warnings that he was becoming seriously ill.

“Flu can progress rapidly, but it’s not like a heart attack. Even when fast, it worsens over a period of hours. There should have been signs that indicated he needed to go to the hospital,” Sharfstein said.

Instead, records show he was moved at midday to the smaller Weslaco station, where he could be isolated with other sick detainees.

Imagine being a child taken from his parents, thrown in a cell, and left to die all alone of the flu.

Hey “conservatives”...think of that holding cell as a “womb” and the child as “unwanted”.

Just try.

Its terribly sad. However, he should not have come here illegally so... his fault or his parents. It's really not my problem.
