Maxine Waters has flipped her wig

Trumpists are gonna wear themselves out dragging the fainting couch all over. (It would be nice if non-Trumpists - the media in particular - stopped falling for it.)

This dude is clearly old enough to remember the '60s, and yet:

This also highlights the lefts inability to rally together as a group. You don’t start attacking your own because one faction wants to respond in kind to the way they are being treated. If a subset of the left wants to attack the administration through public shaming let them do it and just don’t acknowledge it. Instead we get the we are better than this and we need to show these people how to behave and not stoop to their level bullshit. You know how you stop a troll you troll the fuck out of them, just ask jhmd how he liked it when his ginger fire top was posted over and over again with a troll face on it, that’s right he folded up, cried and bitched to the mods.

lol that vietnam protests were more civil than some furious tweets from various nobodies

You are so full of shit and so predictable.

If you had any common sense, you'd realize what Waters did HELPED Trump massive and could some Republicans win in November. My bad, if a Dem isn't sufficiently extreme for MHB, he/she be voted against. Putting a Republican in a seat will show show Trump.

MHB and other millennials will be taking decades to fix the problems Trump's people create.

Lol at the handwringing from everyone that thinks Waters was over the line. Nazis should be treated like Nazis. There is no place for white supremacists in our society. Public shaming them is not only appropriate, it is necessary. Someone has to stand up and say that what is happening in this country is unacceptable.

Trump literally promoted beating up and/or jailing opposition. I think the fascists can deal with some harsh language.

better to echo Trump's actual argument eh? talk about bullshit cowardice.

I don't disagree that they should be shamed, but the messenger and the way it was done doesn't work. She gave away the high ground.

I agree with rj. Maxine and every dem should not stop criticizing Trump, getting angry, firing up the dems over what we are seeing, but she does not need to call for harassment of Trump people -- it is unnecessary as it will and should happen naturally. It just gives them a high profile punching bag (who is also black so they hate her even more).

She's a cartoon character, corrupt and an easy target for the right. Hell, she and her husband would be in jail for insider trading if not for the insane law that protects Members of Congress from such charges.

Feature Corey Booker, Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand, Tammy Duckworth ( a great choice- disabled vet, first mom to give birth while in the Senate, etc.), Sherrod Brown, either of the Castros or many others, but not Maxine Waters.

The Dems need to get rid of Pelosi post haste. She makes RWers salivate and want to vote. The Dems need a new generation.

Maxine Waters was speaking at a rally and the only reason that anyone is talking about it is that the Trumpers think it is a winning issue. So they'll scream and whine and cry and cry and cry... the only ones playing into their hands are the ones giving their caterwauling any bit of legitimacy.

I think that we all agree that at some point political leaders and ideologies cross the "acceptability" threshold. The problem is just identifying where that threshold is. For instance, in hindsight, it's pretty clear that at some point the Nazis crossed this threshold. Identifying when this happens seems to be a polarizing issue though and a large number of people only seem capable of said identification in hindsight rather than when it is ongoing.

I agree that the rise of Donald and the far right is not equivalent at present to the what the Nazis became, but - as provided above by MHB's tweets - authoritarian/fascist movements have similarities and I also agree that the rise of Donald and the far right is somewhere on this spectrum.

So where do we draw the line? As a society are we only able to do so in hindsight rather than in real time?

TLDR: If Donald did become quite similar to the Nazis would we notice? And if so how long would it take for us to reach a tipping point where most people noticed (just as most people today agree that Nazis are awful)?

I normally enjoy listening to Gergen, but he really seems to have forgotten his US History on this one. He should watch a few documentaries on the civil rights movement and antiwar protests before he speaks on this topic again. I will say that, had today's social media existed in the 60s, God only knows how much worse it would have been (and it was already pretty bad).

We Have a Crisis of Democracy, Not Manners

Faced with the unceasing cruelty and degradation of the Trump presidency, liberals have not taken to marching around in public with assault weapons and threatening civil war. I know of no left-wing publication that has followed the example of the right-wing Federalist and run quasi-pornographic fantasies about murdering political enemies. (“Close your eyes and imagine holding someone’s scalp in your hands,” began a recent Federalist article.) Unlike Trump, no Democratic politician I’m aware of has urged his or her followers to beat up opposing demonstrators.

Instead, some progressive celebrities have said some bad words, and some people have treated administration officials with the sort of public opprobrium due members of any other white nationalist organization. Liberals are using their cultural power against the right because it’s the only power they have left, and people have a desperate need to say, and to hear others say, that what is happening in this country is intolerable.

Interesting that the Trumpublicans don't like Trump tactics when they come from the left. It's almost as if those tactics are not the way we should act.

Bullies never like to be treated the way they treat others.

Yep, but in this case, the wrong person did the punching.

The asymmetrical expectations regarding civility and respective ideological positions are truly a sight to behold.

Not going to have any posters who regularly attack our supposed "PC culture" on here defend Waters?

+1000

It is a rich irony to observe Trumpists - and all of their deafening silence (and sometimes active participation) on Trump's violent and inflammatory rhetoric - now cry about Maxine Waters calling for more protests and a restaurant owner refusing service to Sarah Sanders.

Your hypocrisy continues to be exposed.
