Central & South America: Trump Wanted to Conduct a Missile Strike on Mexico

It's not just the US that has asked Maduro to step down. There is regional support for change as the situation in Venezuela impacts Columbia, Brazil and all of Central America, among other countries. Any military action should be multi-national and aimed at restoring the democratic process, not for the US, or anyone else to hand-pick a leader. Also, the US has inflicted tough sanctions on Venezuela. When/if Maduro leaves, the economy should get an immediate boost.

I am not an international political scholar or wisened career diplómate so I really don’t know what to do...and if your hypothetical is correct, the only thing propping up Maduro is Cuba and Russia, then that might change the equation. But, If the concern is truely humanitarian, then I’d suggest having a summit with Maduro and offering sanction relief for democracy concessions and prisoner releases.

I think all of that is Bullshit though. So far the situation in Nicaragua is as bad or worse than Venezuela, and, probably, the only thing that saved Ortega from downfall was Cuban mercenaries in the streets beating up and killing protestors and Russian money. All while we sat idly by barely even noticing. There is a thread on the tunnels about the Nica revolt where 80% of the posts are from me updating the situation and the rest are from Sailor and Whatamount saying that Nicaraguan people deserve it for embracing socialism 30 years ago.

What is so special about Venezuela that the humanitarian crisis there is so different than Nicaragua, or any other country with a brutal dictator oppressing their people? How do we establish a consistent policy for intervention that is not determined by the whimsy of corporate news?

Oh, and the answer is oil. Buncha chicken hawks... Eagerly awaiting y’all to endorse intervention re: Israel-Palestine.

Yeah I'm sure sending American troops to another country will end in an ultimate success. Putin will really get that we aren't fucking around this time! Just like we showed him with Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Afghanistan.

Actually he showed us in Syria.

imperialist

We wouldn't be where we are today without imperialism. Underrated ethos.

This is why socialism always fails, warmonger.

Not sure what socialism has to do with anything but this is why we don't listen to townies, PuttersMonger.

so we should let Russia figure it out for them, then.

Maybe? I mean, there are a lot of places that are worthy of American intervention, places where the mediators are China and Russia. Look at counties in Eastern and Central Africa, Central Asia, etc. Why aren't we intervening in countries in those regions, each with its own compelling claim regarding deplorable conditions for its citizens.

We are. Did you forget the 4 US soldiers killed in an ambush in Niger in 2017? Operating out of a base that no one really knew we had or why?

Actually he showed us in Syria.

We are hating on Putters now? Low blow.

Imperialism is an underrated ethos. This is a fantastic take.

Pretty telling that the limousine liberal boomer from CA saves his vitriol for me, someone who opposes military intervention, rather than for the guy openly cheering US imperialism.

Good Lord, the rod up that man's butt must have a rod up it's butt!

Maybe I’m not paying attention. It feels like most of you are arguing the same thing in different ways.
