2019 offical College Football thread

Regular season games are all about making money for the home team. Many have seven home games. It will be difficult to get them to give up a game for a few more teams to get into a playoff. Same for bowl games with payouts, even if they get split in conference.

These decisions really bother me. You don't get to be a high draft choice by yourself. Your teammates contribute substantially. But then you abandon them heading into arguably the biggest game of the season. Maybe it makes economic sense; but it seems extremely selfish.

I would have rather Givens had done this then just not show up for the game like he did.

It’s also strange that practicing for 3 weeks and being in a bowl game isn’t good for a highly regarded player’s draft status.

If you aren’t playing for the natty the bowl games are meaningless. Harmon gave it all for 3 years to NCSU. Go get that money young man.

This. Bowl games are largely meaningless.

I take the view bowl games are the first game of next season, not the last game of this season.

The issue isn't draft status because of play. It is much more about getting injured either in the game or during practices leading to it. A serious injury would hurt draft position much more than poor performance.

It looks like a coaching change at Ohio State.
Urban retiring after the Rose Bowl.

If that was a widely held belief more players would skip bowls especially QBs.

It is becoming more and more commonplace for those that are guaranteed top 2-3 round picks and guessing it will only become more accepted and you will see more players do it to preserve their "value". I think for others playing in a bowl and continuing to showcase their abilities will make more sense if not a top pick and hence why many still play.

Christian McCaffrey did it a couple of years ago as an expected 1st rounder and seeing it more and more. If you aren't in the playoffs then it really is just a fun exhibition and why risk millions for one game with your teammates especially in our narcissistic society? I agree with Mebane I wasn't a big fan of Christian's bolting on Stanford for his final game with his friends, but that is the me mentality of today.

Also I think bowls used to be more prestigious but now with so many of them along with the CFP makes all other bowl games outside of CFP feel more meaningless, if you will, so guessing that comes into play in a lot of the player's minds.

QB is the least likely position to get injured on the field besides specialists. Having an issue with kids protecting their future and their potential earning power to play in a meaningless exhibition that makes money for everyone but them is insane. If you think they owe your university anything more after giving them all they had for 3-4 years then I don't know what to tell you.

This is one of the great annual board discussions.

(not actually great)
