2019 offical College Football thread

Reminds me of a funny story about Bronco.

A friend's son was offered by UVa to play safety, but he wanted to play WR. So when they meet in Bronco's office, the kid told Bronco he really wanted to play WR in college. Bronco said - 'Son, you are going to be a great college WR, but not here at UVa. If you want to play here, you will be a safety'.

Kid eventually committed to App and had a solid freshman year at WR, but I loved how straight-forward Bronco was about it.

Appreciate the honesty. Good story. Hope the kid is happy at App.

[Redacted] is a much better pro coach than college coach. I don't see the point.

Exactly! With what he was given at Indianapolis, he should have won. What he did during the Colts undefeated season was take the steam out of a great team, pulling starters, etc and not trying to win and keep the ball rolling. The lost their mojo then got totally shocked by NOLO's onside kick in the second half leading to the Drew Brees Super Bowl victory in 2010. Caldwell got his Super Bowl ring as an asst coach under Tony Dungy. Jim Caldwell certainly knows football & is a great person. Jeff [Redacted] certainly knows basketball. Neither should have been head coaches at Wake Forest University.

Yeah. I didn’t like Caldwell as a coach at Wake either. But I greatly respect how he got back up and got a quality mentor in Dungy and rebuilt his career to get jobs at the top of his profession. It’s a life lesson to anybody in their 30s and 40s who suffers a career setback.

Caldwell was a good recruiter. Part of his problem at WF had to do with conditioning. His players tended to be in really poor shape...strong perhaps and large, but unprepared to run and compete hard for 4 quarters.

To be fair to Caldwell, when he took over the job from Dooley, the WF roster was lacking (an understatement).

Like Grobe's final years, Dooley's recruiting tailed off during his time at WF, and Dooley left after the Weedeater Bowl win on a team loaded with seniors. Caldwell did improve the talent and WF's roster was significantly improved over Caldwell's last few years at WF, including an Aloha Bowl appearance in Caldwell's 2nd to last year. It was Caldwell's talent which Grobe promptly took advantage of (kudos to Grobe). Also, WF's commitment to football in the late 1990s was well-behind the rest of the conference. All that said, in JC's last year, with his players, WF went 2-9 (1-7); no excuses. Understood the decision to let JC go.

Jim Caldwell was a bad college football coach. Record doesn't lie, sorry. 26-63 overall for 29.2% & 12-52 ACC record for 18.75%. This was after 8 seasons. Should have been fired after 6 seasons when he had gone 3-8 & 2-6, but only in a [Redacted]-like moment, Well-Man gave him 2 more years. Nice man, real good guy and obviously has great football knowledge, but was not a good college football coach!

Did you miss the last sentence of my post or..?

Pretty ridiculous, if true, that they haven't even told Hurts where he stands, and that Saban said he didn't know if Hurts would be with the team. Basically sounds like he's trying to push the kid out.

When Mama starts talking to the press, it is never good. Saban will not like that

Toughest divisions in college football:
1--Big Ten East because of the Top 10 strength of Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan & Michigan State. All with 10-12 win chances & playoff chances. MD & Rutgers weigh them down but Indiana has a 7 win chance
1A--SEC West because of top to bottom balance--Bama with title aspirations, Auburn, Miss St & A&M with 10 win chances, LSU at 8 or 9 wins & Ole Miss better than most think. Only Razorbacks are a bottom feeder
3--ACC Atlantic--Clemson going for another title, FSU back in the game with a new coach, BC & Wake both coming up to 8 or 9 win seasons & State trying to get to 10 wins. Louisville has to comeback from losing Jackson & Syracuse will be decent but not good.
4--PAC 12 North--Washington is a definite playoff aspirant with Browning at QB & a strong D. Stanford has Love & is a Top 10 team. Oregon is going to rebound and be good as is Cal. Wazu is on the rise with Leach.

U of MD has scheduled a press conference for 2 pm today. Could be just to outline the next steps in the internal investigation or DJ Durkin (the MD HC) could be axed. BTW, MD already lost one of their 2019 commits an OL from NC (Parker Moorer from Mallard Creek HS in Charlotte).

University of Maryland accepts legal & moral responsibility for the mistakes of its athletic training staff at a workout that led to the death of Jordan McNair. They also parted ways with Rick Court, the asst AD for sports performance.

And then there is the Third down and X yards and we ran an X-1 yard route every fucking time. It was like some sick game to see how close we could get to the marker without going over.

Appreciate the honesty. Good story. Hope the kid is happy at App.

Is he number 84 or 86, white kid from NC, who went crazy against us last year?

LSU to have two QB' to transfer for more playing time--freshman Narcisse & junior McMillan. That leaves Ohio State transfer Joe Burrows to battle it out with Myles Brennan. Can LSU ever get a potent offense going?

In 2016-17, the ACC brought in $418.1 million, compared to $650 million for the SEC and $513 million for the Big Ten. How much has that gap hurt the conference, and will the ACC network help close that gap?
