The most basic thing is the extreme left and the extreme right aren't polar opposites. It's not a line. It's a circle. The extremes are almost identical.

Detached suburbanites can't comprehend that the masses on both sides are legitimately angry about politics, so their bloodless pragmatism doesn't appeal to anyone. Just as RJ so thoughtfully pointed out just now, moderates just group all the angry people together and dismiss all of them.
