GOAT

Ronaldo in the Champions League:
  • Most Goals
  • Most Home Goals
  • Most Away Goals
  • Most Group Goals
  • Most Knockout Goals
  • Most Final Goals
  • Most Penalties
  • Most Free-Kicks
  • Most Headers
  • Most Hattricks
  • Most Assists

Goals in Knockout Stages:

C. Ronaldo: 63
L. Messi: 40

Fuck outta here with anyone thinking Messi is better.

Seriously.

Something tells me Messi doesn't propel that Juve side to the quarters today

well, he'll have his chance to propel his side tomorrow. and Ronaldo simply tied Messi today for most hat tricks. Ronaldo has scored 15 more goals in about 30 more appearances in the competition, but Messi's goals per game ratio is higher at .81 vs. .76.

both fantastic players. would be nice for them to face off in a final.

0-0 in the first leg away and then winning at home isn't "propelling"

You just gotta ignore him. Not even most Real Madrid fans think he’s better

Goals also don’t tell the whole story. Kind of like how Kareem and the Mailman aren’t considered the two greatest basketball players of all time.

Perhaps you missed the most assists part as well?

Right, but in 30 more appearances than Messi

If one wins more Champions League games/ties, one tends to play more Champions League games/ties.

Let's dive in!

Ronaldo pre-Messi in CL: 8 games, 0 goals (3 with Sporting, 5 with {a rather pedestrian by European standards} MUFC)

2004/05: Messi: 1 match, 0 goals; Ronaldo: 8 matches, 0 goals -- a slightly better MUFC side (won League Cup) but still not very good for European competition. Tim Howard and Roy Carroll were the GKers. Enough said.

2005/06 - 2008/09: Messi: 32 matches, 17 goals; Ronaldo 42 matches, 16 goals (last years of Ronaldo at United and both players breaking into their absolute Prime - two CL wins for Messi, one for Ronaldo)

2009/10 - 2013/14: Messi: 53 matches, 50 goals; Ronaldo: 51 matches, 52 goals (1 CL win each)

2014/15 - 2017/18: Messi: 39 matches, 33 goals; Ronaldo: 50 matches, 53 goals (2 CL wins for Messi, 3 CL wins for Ronaldo)

2018/19 to date: Messi: 5 matches, 6 goals; Ronaldo: 7 matches, 4 goals

So Ronaldo has undoubtedly done more over time, more recently, and in general than Messi.

What else ya got?

Who y’all got tomorrow:

Pool or Bayern
Barca or Lyon

Kinda thinking Bayern but hope pool wins. Barca obviously *should* win but you can’t really take any individual game for granted with Valverde

Bayern in a VVD mistake leading to a 89th min goal. 3-2

Barca by 3+ clear goals

Everyone doubted Klopp after seeing Lallana who went on to be Man of the Match against Burnley.

Starting Gini, Hendo, and Millie at CM again seems like an odd choice. With VVD back, we can afford to put in a mid that can be the link with the front 3. Seems very conservative, but I haven't watched enough of Bayern to know how that relates to their mid.

is more appearances supposed to be an argument for or against ronaldo

he's played more games so he's had more assists. Messi's goals and assists rate per game is higher than Ronaldo's, so there's a good chance he can surpass Ronaldo when all is said and done. Ronaldo and Real Madrid fans also conveniently like to forget domestic competitions these days for some reason. it looks like Ronaldo is well on his way to winning Serie A, but his side was quite disappointing domestically when he was in Spain.
