Former WF Hoops Asst Coach Jamil Jones gets probation for 3rd degree assault (update)

So he wasn't "banging on cars", but knocking on windows looking for his Uber ride? This just took a turn for the worse for Jones.

That's not really a newly revealed hypothesis and just something that his brother said. Not sure it's established as fact or fiction. But think about it -- this guy is so drunk that he doesn't even remember what sort of car his Uber is supposed to be so he's just banking on windows of cars as they approach the corner. What an asshole.

Some news stories did mention this.

It's hard to know the accuracy of any reported details about the case. But the established facts (i.e. Jones punched a man and the medical examiner ruled that the man died as a direct or indirect result of the punch) are quite bad enough on their own.

https://www.si.com/college-basketball/2018/08/10/wake-forest-jamill-jones-arrest-punch-victim

"...Police say Szabo banged on Jones' SUV window, apparently thinking the vehicle was his Uber ride.

A person familiar with the investigation told The Associated Press that Szabo may have been drunkenly knocking on car windows before Jones allegedly confronted him. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the person was not allowed to speak publicly...."

Unless other reports were incorrect, that SI article is fraught with inaccuracies. or at a minimum is missing some pretty key details. It has no mention of the other person that got punched by the victim after coming out to see what all the ruckus (caused by the victim) was, or that Jones helped get the victim to the sidewalk. Not absolving Jones of what he did, but it sounds like their description that the victim knocked on some windows, Jones confronted him, then punched him and "sped off" is far from the whole story.

Biff Tannen: the man who has never done anything stupid but mostly harmless when shit faced drunk

And was doing so loud enough that someone came out of their residence to see what all the commotion was. And that someone then got punched by the guy.

Illini fan here (was here a bit during the Ayo recruitment).. Been following this since the news broke. I didn't sift through all of this but if this story linked story is true then I'd say he was likely justified in confronting the man and it'll likely come down to some eye witness to testify who threw the first punch or who aggressively closed the space between the two of them. If somebody aggressively charges you and you deem it necessary to defend yourself you have that right.

"Szabo — in town for his stepsister’s wedding — had left his brother’s LIC hotel and was looking for a cab he ordered, his family claimed.
Szabo, 35, banged multiple cars in front of 41-10 29th St. at around 1:15 a.m., sources said.

A local resident heard the ruckus and came out of his home to confront Szabo, who then punched that person in the face, according to the sources.

Jones then approached Szabo and slugged him — causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head on the pavement."

If Szabo had already punched somebody in the face, as said here, you'd really think most charges will be dropped. I don't know what they'll do when him just leaving the scene. Some charges likely still pressed but he'd hardly be the first guy to knock somebody out (not knowing more damage was done) and walking away.

Anyone thinking he coaches another moment at wake is insane. First, it's the right thing after exercising terrible judgment. Second, can you imagine what other coaches will say to the parents of recruits?

Yeah, but the story could add street cred in the eyes of some recruits. Of course, those recruits wouldn't possess the requisite culture for admission to MSD

Good point. He was probably making one of those innocent, late-night "Meals on Wheels" deliveries...to an OWG.

Maybe try leaving the 100 yard bubble around the Sports Performance Center.

That he stood up for a kid the same age as theirs?

His mom said his phone died after the Uber picked up his ride, so he didn't know which car it was. Now how accurate that is IDK.

Yeah she wasn't there and is not a reliable source.

Not that this is a big story, but so much lazy copypasta style reporting on this. Probably speaks more to the current state of 'journalism' in general.

Yeah, how the hell would you confirm that?
Wouldn't be hard to see when he requested the Uber and when his phone dropped connection with the tower. It should all be in the logs.
