Former WF Hoops Asst Coach Jamil Jones gets probation for 3rd degree assault (update)

Just came across a print copy of the Raleigh News Observer in a drugstore. The dominant story on Page 1 of the sports section was a puff piece on Duke's Zion Williamson, and I saw no sign of the Jamil Jones story. I know Durham is way closer to Raleigh than Winston-Salem, and should probably be happy for one less moment of public shaming, but damn, are we that irrelevant?

Now on News and Observer that Szabo has NC connections....Raleigh area...

“Szabo has ties to North Carolina. His mom, Donna Kent, and stepfather, Bob Kent, live in Raleigh. His father, Balazs Szabo, lives in Hillsborough.

Efforts to reach Donna Kent were unsuccessful. When reached by phone, Balazs Szabo declined to comment.

Sandor Szabo, 35, once lived in Raleigh and attended Millbrook High School. According to his LinkedIn page, Szabo studied project management business administration from 2005-09 at DeVry University’s Raleigh campus and received a bachelor’s degree. “

Hey guys, I’m out with a group of State/UNC grads who are telling me there is no trace of an article that states the victim actually punched someone before Jones jumped in and did what he did.

Can someone do me a solid and post an article that supports this. I don’t have the time to dig through the whole thread.

Here is the article from the New York Post. Fifth paragraph.

I'm not trying to make light of the situation but if you step back from Wake Forest basketball as an alum or diehard fan, this is sadly comical.

You have an AD who fired a coach in 2010 due to "culture issues". Now, we have an assistant coach charged with a homicide and absolutely NOTHING to show for the years in between.
If you want to measure any of this as progress, feel free.

As I said much earlier in this thread, I think it wise for us to wait for all the facts come out before we make a judgement either way. If they come out unfavorable to Jamil, then we can pillory him, but let's wait until then before we do

"Homicide" is not just a medical term. The term "homicide" is used frequently in the Laws of New York State.

§ 125.00 Homicide defined.
Homicide means conduct which causes the death of a person or an unborn
child with which a female has been pregnant for more than twenty-four
weeks under circumstances constituting murder, manslaughter in the first
degree, manslaughter in the second degree, criminally negligent
homicide, abortion in the first degree or self-abortion in the first
degree.

So my understanding is that "homicide" is a broad term that encompasses the crimes of murder, manslaughter, etc.

It's true that the medical examiner's opinion is not the same as a legal ruling by a judge or a jury, but it's more than just a technical medical term. The ruling gives a green light to the prosecutor to charge the accused with one of the types of homicide that are defined in the laws of the state.

In the context of a medical examiner finding, it is merely a medical opinion as to the manner of death. As I explained.

That’s it.

Legal code I can’t speak to.

But I think the term can also include include causing the death of someone in a way that is not illegal or a crime—self defense and what not.

Here’s a link to a NY lawyer page that touches on the terms: link.

I’m not arguing anything about this case, just cautioning not to over interpret the meaning of the medical examiner finding of homicide as the manner of death.

Well yeah, that pretty much sums it up. Culture doesn’t get much worse than killing a guy.

Yes, WF basketball seems to need no outside assistance at being just confoundingly troubled. Not that a lot of schools don’t have scandal and misfortune, but ours is just a strange series of tales for being one of the smallest P6 schools. We’ve made the 30 for 30 joke on here, but someone should write a book, or at least give it the long-form article treatment.

We got a ways to go before we catch Baylor.

Illini fan here (was here a bit during the Ayo recruitment).. Been following this since the news broke. I didn't sift through all of this but if this story linked story is true then I'd say he was likely justified in confronting the man and it'll likely come down to some eye witness to testify who threw the first punch or who aggressively closed the space between the two of them. If somebody aggressively charges you and you deem it necessary to defend yourself you have that right.

"Szabo — in town for his stepsister’s wedding — had left his brother’s LIC hotel and was looking for a cab he ordered, his family claimed.
Szabo, 35, banged multiple cars in front of 41-10 29th St. at around 1:15 a.m., sources said.

A local resident heard the ruckus and came out of his home to confront Szabo, who then punched that person in the face, according to the sources.

Jones then approached Szabo and slugged him — causing him to fall to the ground and hit his head on the pavement."

If Szabo had already punched somebody in the face, as said here, you'd really think most charges will be dropped. I don't know what they'll do when him just leaving the scene. Some charges likely still pressed but he'd hardly be the first guy to knock somebody out (not knowing more damage was done) and walking away.

One shot bro
