The New Socialists

The people weren't happy with any of the candidates.
That's true in a lot of races. Still had to vote for one of the other and more people voted for her than him.

Again, as far as I know, Bernie is still the most popular politician in America. Medicare For All is polling ridiculously high. We have a growing recognition of the complete failures of Obama style liberalism. What signs are telling you the country is itching for centrists?

We don't live in a democracy. Do you think DSA has a vision that is more or less democratic than our current system? What do you view as having produced Trump and the GOP? Why would you continue putting your faith in a democratic party that has no backbone, has continuously sold out the working class to the rich, and whose entire momentum is now being driven by a progressive caucus? Again, I think we disagree on exactly what caused Trump.

i don't know if it's more or less democratic and i don't believe it was a lack of democracy that caused Trump

given the state of American politics, we're often forced to choose the lesser of two evils, even if that means supporting a bad candidate like Hillary Clinton and also rejecting the unlikely to win, if more personally attractive candidate

I'd posit that Bernie had a very positive reputation, he just had zero name recognition as compared to Hillary and Trump who have both been worldwide celebrities for decades.Bernie probably wins that primary against Al Gore or John Kerry.

I'd posit that Bernie simply was not Hillary.

No he doesn't. Gore was the sitting VP and had a family history in politics. Kerry had a ton of national rep. Bernie was a total no name at the beginning of his run.

Haters are going to hate. The key is to elect enough Dems and pressure them to support it. Eventually M4A will just be and haters will only be able to take pot shots at it.

The key will also be to keep establishment dems from watering it down.

True but that’s what the pressure is for. If they face more pressure from the left than the right (or realize the right is full of it and isn’t governing in good faith), they’ll stay on board.

Ozarks?

Since everyone wants to be the thread police, I'm trying to bring the various socialism topics back to this thread.

RJ, McDonalds workers are striking today in LA and around the country to protest sexual harassment on the job and the right to form a union. It'd be cool if you could go support them.

Here’s a question that maybe you have an answer for. In a situation like McDonalds you have workers making very little and obviously an unlivable wage. Current policy has it where the government is essentially subsidizing McDonalds by making up the rest through what we consider welfare etc... Now the idea would be to push McDonalds and other corporations towards providing livable wage or taxes for not providing a livable wage that go back into the programs that then support their workers. Though I have no idea if this is a socialist platform.

The question then becomes how does one go about requiring this from corporations and is the idea that corporations will be willing to give up a certain percentage of profit and remain in business because any profit is better than 0. Seems what would likely happen is an increase in automation for jobs that require minimal skill and therefore increasing the demise of unskilled workers.
