Boston College - Game Time Moved to 5:30pm Kickoff

The storm is predicted to start impacting the W-S area sometime midday on Thursday. My bet is that the game gets postponed.

Message to campus:

The University plans to communicate a decision regarding classes for Thursday, Sept. 13, and Friday, Sept. 14, no later than 9 p.m. tonight. In the event that classes are canceled, residence halls and dining services will remain open.

Q: Will athletic events scheduled for this week still be held?
A: Wake Forest University and the Atlantic Coast Conference office continue to monitor the progress of all weather-related issues as they pertain to athletic events this week. Please monitor all Wake Forest Athletics social media accounts for updates and future notifications.

The latest forecast issued by NOAA indicated that the hurricane won't make land fall on the NC Coast until Friday morning. I think they will play and the weather will be benign in W-S on Thursday night.

Most weather models show the storm slowing. Conditions in W-S at the time of the game are 10-25 mph with anywhere from 10-50% chance of rain. Really no reason to cancel anything imo.

landfall means the eye -- the middle of the storm -- coming ashore.

Yeah, because once the game is over everyone is just magically teleported back to safety and Wake won't have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars playing in an empty stadium.

tropical storm-force winds are around 20% likely by 8:00 pm Thursday and 50% likely by around 2:00 am Friday (which is about when BC could reasonably expect to be on a plane back to Boston)

these are definitely better odds than what was shown yesterday

In Fla landfall means the leading edge of the Hurricane

everywhere, landfall means the eye wall

expanded:

The Landfall Fallacy. Now, there is this thing about scientists, even meteorologists. When dealing with time-based phenomena, they need to know when something starts and when it ends, so they can do things like measure when on average certain things start, how long on average they last, etc. Therefore, there has to be an agreed upon point in time when a hurricane starts to exist (this is when the winds reach a certain strength and the cyclonic storm reaches a certain degree of organization, all of which is actually kinda hard to measure but they do it anyway). There is also an agreed upon point at which the hurricane “hits land” … known as landfall. This is when the eye of the hurricane, which is usually still visible on satellite views, on radar, as well as on the ground, crosses the shoreline. That is the arbitrarily decided on moment when scientists say the hurricane is at a certain point in its life cycle.

This does not. Repeat, not. NOT. mean that a hurricane “hits land” or “arrives” or “becomes a problem” or “starts to do damage” on “landfall.” No. The hurricane arrived hours before landfall! The outer bands that brought the beginnings of flooding rain came way before. The occasional tornado spun off by a hurricane may have already done in a neighborhood hours before. The highly damaging winds arrived long ago. The storm surge may have even started to chew up cities, towns, and industrial areas along the coast before the eye wall crosses landward, depending on all sorts of different factors. Hell, it is actually possible for a hurricane to totally mess up a coastal region then move back out to sea with the eye never crossing the coast. No landfall, but big problems. Landfall is not arrival.

Not only has it slowed but has moved more north/east from yesterday when looking like a direct hit to Wilmington and then on up through Charlotte, W/S. Now forecasting impact to hit Charlotte more on Sat. (vs. later Thurs/Friday earlier), so that definitely bodes well for WS and a Thurs. night game given it is 60+ miles north of Charlotte.

5:30 PM kickoff Thurs

This looks like the best decision.

5:30 will present some unique traffic problems with Pepsi, Hanes and others letting out around then and creating a massive traffic jam possibly. Still, probably the safest and most reasonable solution
