In a 1979 paper entitled “The Two Faces of Unionism,” economists Richard Freeman and James Medoff argued that “by providing workers with a voice both at the workplace and in the political arena, unions can and do affect positively the functioning of the economic and social systems.”

So supporters of free markets should rethink their antipathy to unions. As socialism gains support among the young, both economists and free-market thinkers should consider the possibility that unions -- that odd hybrid of free-market bargaining and government intervention -- were the vaccine that allowed the U.S. and other rich nations to largely escape the disasters of communism in the 20th century.

Chicago is a union town, but also has a long history of racial exclusion, much of which has been addressed, some of which has not -- better transparency and accountability is necessary

big hotel strike happening the last couple weeks, mostly around health insurance; report that the first hotel has acquiesced to all demands just this afternoon

Awww...throw punch after punch at RJ...then you WILL cry when he hits back....

Harmonious started this thread in a perfectly FRIENDLY manner. He had no intentions of any confrontation, but you couldn't help yoruself.

There NEVER needed to be a problem on this thread.

Rember, RJ NEVER said he wouldn't hit back. He won't throw the first punch, but he WILL hit back. Be prepared.

I posted this link on another thread...will repost here.

Europe could have the secret to saving America’s unions

Still, it’s remarkable how many different people have all converged on something like a European approach to unionism. As Madland put it, “This feels like an idea whose time has come.”

What an idea, look at actual solutions that work in other countries and try to apply them in the US.

Sorry, though, this is 'Merica, we're exceptional, and the need to protect the American dream of unlimited profits means we are all doomed to be wage slaves with shitty health care who regularly get shot in our schools and workplaces.

I really dont like tethering human dignity to the whims of private employment - healthcare, food, shelter, ect., but I definitely agree that our society would be much healthier if we hadn't crushed labor organization in this country. "At Will" employment is a fascist scam.
