2018-2019 MLB Hot Stove Thread

Players and their agents are no longer excited to head to free agency. So, they are signing "team friendly" deals to ensure long-term security. Makes sense particularly for pitchers that are always one pitch away from TJ surgery.

A huge long term win for owners. Stonewall the FA process enough that current arb-eligible players get scared and lock themselves into team-friendly deals. The next CBA process is going to be a shitshow.

Machado to the Padres.

Harper will sign shortly for a contract that is slightly better. For Boras, it's all about keeping score.

What a lucky dude. Compare his situation with Moustakas, who plays a more premium position and has a higher career war. Hos is slightly younger, but in what world does it make sense that Hosmer gets 8/144 and Moose can't even get a multiyear deal?

Bad teams have to pay a premium to get players to sign with them.

Also, the Padres knew they had a couple of young studs coming up as middle infielders. Having a great fielding first baseman will also help them.

10/$300,000,001 for Harper

Boras won't be happy unless he gets Harper the highest all time contract number. I think that the current record is Stanton's $325 million. So Harper will be holding for at least $325,000,001.

If Scott Boras was Trout's agent, the Phillies could wait on Trout, with the confidence that if they offer the largest contract when, not if, Trout gets to free agency, they will sign him.

But Boras is not Trout's agent. Craig Landis, a California native, is Trout's agent. The Angels have already started up negotiations with Trout, and Trout is comfortable in Anaheim. A fairly reasonable possibility exists that the Angels lock up Trout before he hits free agency. Any team planning their future on landing Mike Trout after the 2020 season, may be waiting for an event that never happens.

^^^ There's definitely a "bird in the hand" factor for the Phillies with Harper vs. Trout.

They could also punt on Harper, go grab Adam Jones or Marwin Gonazlez, (plus Keuchel and Kimbrel), then go after Arenado next year. Although Arenado a) could also sign an extension, and b) is a classic Coors Field stats guy. His splits are brutal.

The Angels haven't done jack since Trout has been there. Why trust them to do the right thing now as he starts to approach free agency?

If Phils get Harper, Trout could give Phils hometown discount and come be part of a formidable outfit.

If the Phillies could get Trout an offseason gig as a local network weatherman, it might seal the deal.

Dang, I like Jeff Sullivan and will miss his chats.

Can't believe a Bryce Harper deal didn't get leaked in the middle of Manny's press conference.
