2020 Democratic Presidential Nominees

I think we have huge problems with our version of pure Capitalism and I am a small business owner. The rules have changed to try and run us guys out of business and constantly help the big guys.

Ph what do you view as poor in Bernie’s track record with minorities? Or that he could do better at?

He doesn’t have one. He believes racial problems are class problems.

Yep. And Democrats do a horrible job of making the case why Democrat policies are pro-small business and Republican policies are slanted toward big business.

Well Obama choked big time when it came to taking the banks to the woodshed. Now they're bigger, stronger, more powerful, and the general perception is the US Govt will bail them out anytime they might actually lose money. It was his single biggest failure.

I agree. But sadly, there was barely any movement to do so. The Occupy movement was basically nothing. If there is a financial crisis before 2020, I definitely think there will be more of a push to address the banks.

The entire industry are just pure leeches and provide very little value. Banks these days ain't lending to mom and pop stores at 5% interest without a personal guarantee. They're just a complete transfer of wealth mechanism. I've paid an ungodly amount of interest in my life, and I'm probably in the top 1% of financially literate americans. The half of the country like me that's over extended themselves like I did pretty much has no chance.

Yep. Think about your basic pathway to wealth in this country. It's amazing how we just let the financial industry be middlemen just to keep our own money. But for some reason we have accepted that we should pay all kinds of fees throughout our life to financial security when we're old, but it's horrible to pay taxes for things like universal health care, universal basic income, unemployment benefits, or politicians who want job guarantees and $15 minimum wage.

there is no case to be made

it's not a messaging problem, it's a substance problem

there was definitely a mainstream movement to reign in the banks

Is this perspective isolated to Bernie individually as candidate/politician, or do you think it applies more broadly to DSA or DSA-lite candidates?

I know that Bernie had a couple of public statement screw ups, and for that he deserves criticism.

I struggle a lot personally with this question of class vs. race. There is a decent unpacking of class vs. race in the new socialists thread. And I wish that, rather than the toxicity and personal attacks that kind of ran Coates out of the public square, that we had more public debate along the lines of Coates (or Nikole Hannah Jones)/Cornell West on the topic.

Just Bernie as far as I can see. But again he’s a 70-something Jewish guy from Vermont. I wouldn’t expect him to be adept on racial issues.

Which are what in your opinion?

Are there problems with our version of capitalism? If so, are they better or worse than socialism?

Punishing success and rewarding mediocrity is typically a recipe for failure. Government controlled production is a recipe for failure.

Why didn’t Bernie get more credit for his participation in the civil rights movement/protests back in the day, about the same time Hillary was interning for the RNC? There were photos of him getting arrested while standing up for civil rights and no one cared.

That’s socialism? What’s the difference in socialism and communism?

Some people cared-a few older right-wingers on my facebook feed were very angry with Bernie for that photo.

Your answer.

Good thing socialism doesn’t mean “government controlled production.”
