2020 Democratic Presidential Nominees

Perhaps he’s not the only progressive in this race, at least if you take everyone’s platform at face value, but he’s damn sure the biggest reason everyone is gunning for the progressive mantle

Yes. Because he helped Democrats realize how left the party (and the country) actually is. Doesn’t mean he’s the only Progressive by default. Bernie is going to have a tough time in debates speaking after someone else has already given his basic stump speech.

I’d listen to a podcast of people arguing about who is the most progressive. That would be entertaining.

I like to come to this board to see MHB's and MDMH's multiple daily posts trashing possible Dem candidates for not passing purity testing, and rarely posting anything about MarALardass and the damage he is doing daily. Sad!

fun homework. Find the most recent example of me "trashing possible Dem candidates."

True. Not sure how relevant that is to picking the best 2020 candidate though.

It's not relevant if you believe the candidates are earnest in their intentions to follow through on their platform, but it is relevant if think they'll fall back to the middle a la Obama after a progressive campaign.

Bernie is least likely to track back post-primary.

Obama’s campaign wasn’t all that progressive especially by 2018 standards. He didn’t go back on his campaign he just wants as progressive as people hoped he would be.

Either way, the next Dem President will be Progressive if Progressives push hard enough from the base and from Congress. Of course he or she will never been Progressive enough for some people but whatever.

Bernie raised $4 M in one day. The largest announcement day total in U.S. Presidential campaign history.

Great. Hopefully he saves some of that for the candidates who aren’t going to be 79 on Election Night 2020.

I rarely post about Trump because nearly everyone I discuss politics with feels the same way about Trump so there's nothing to add or debate - it's like discussing the weather. My only unique opinion about Trump is that 90% of my hate for him is just a general hate of Christian evangelical conservativism - the greed, imperialism, ignorance, authoritarianism, and the racism. All the 'isms. That's why it makes me sick that Clinton & W Bush era neo-cons are being welcomed back into political relevance, like they werent complicit in killing a million Iraqis. The Trump presidency & administration will probably be normalized even faster.

I doubt Bernie is gonna do as well with the donkey voters this time because aggression by claiming victimhood is not really his game; his shtick is much more a socialism for numb skulls, where problems are identified but viable solutions and the means to pay for them are not.

I happen to think at least some of them are. But then it’s still only relevant if you think the best way, or the only way, to enact the most progressive agenda possible (both short term and long term) is to nominate the most progressive candidate possible. And I’m not sure that’s true.

Great piece, though I disagree with his conclusion in the second to last paragraph:

“You don’t have to be a neoliberal tool to wonder whether major system overhaul should be part of the Democratic platform right now, even if it’s something many progressives aspire to.”

The fact that it’s going to be politically difficult (or impossible if we don’t have the Senate) is a horrible reason to remove true Medicare for All and other systemic overhauls from the platform.
