Fire Danny Manning Campaign

On number two, he had a pretty low bar to clear. And he did preside over the Caldwell years.

I seriously doubt the decision about a new bball coach will be taken out of RW's hands. More than once in the past he's prided himself on being the sole-decision maker when it comes to hiring new head coaches. I expect he will be "encouraged" by some influential deep pockets to make a change in the spring, then will retire soon after he lines up a replacement. I expected him to retire before a judgment had to be made about Manning, but for very obvious reasons there's no incentive for him to leave.

Agreed regarding football.

Wellman obviously made a terrible hire in basketball, followed by an uninspired hire. I don't think the powers that be will let Wellman make be the sole decision-maker again.

C'mon LK. We went to school at the same time. Aren't you a mod? You should be able to look at my email address and know exactly who I am.
Wow. I had you pegged for an old.

He made a terrible hire followed by a very poor hire.

The real problem is Wellman has shown him self too arrogant to admit his mistakes and rectify them in a reasonable time frame. BZ had to have hated his years at Wake and BZ's failures did not hurt his ability to be gainfully employed as an NBA assistant (where he should always remained). Wellman tried to help his friend and succeeded in making his friend's life complete misery while burning down what was built over 2 generations.

There is no way to justify this. There is no way that raising some money to build some buildings or championships in minor sports compensates for this.

The destruction of the basketball program is not quantifiable. He made pretty much the worst possible decision each time he could have made a decision.

Supporting this man and caring about Wake is not compatible in any way.

Thanks for the civil post.

Wake has only had 4 ADs in the history of the school - Hooks for 28 years (6 championships), Wellman for 26 (19 championships), Weaver for 17 (2 championships - both Palmer's debated national championships), and Gibson for 10 (1 championship - baseball). I like championships, which is why I would advocate for that stat (plus they're easy data to find). If there is another readily available stat I would be interested to see it.

What is debated about Palmer's titles? He never won one.

Wait, there are people that don’t think the bzzzout campaign was a stunning success? The billboard was best thing that ever came from these boards

The argument for keeping Wellman goes like this:
1. He is the most accomplished AD in the history of Wake Forest, and it’s not even close.
2. He has overseen the most successful run in the history of Wake football, and football is currently the most important NCAA sport.
3. He was a key player in keeping the ACC together, which kept Wake in a P5 conference.

The argument for firing Wellman goes like this:
1. He screwed up the basketball program, in a major way.
2. Because of how he fired Dino, he has a bad rep in the NCAA basketball coaching community, which makes it challenging for Wake to attract a top coach.

IMO, both of these arguments are reasonable.

What I think will happen is what several others have suggested. Manning will be let go after another lackluster season and then a committee will lead the hiring of a new basketball coach, with Wellman having much less influence than he did over the previous several b-ball hirings.

That was a great argument in 2012, a defensible one in 2014, a complete shit one today.

Mike Buddie appears to be crushing it at Furman

Speaking of Furman, former Mt Airy player Clay Mount (6’6” SF) is playing well for them. Dunked a last second shot to win a game last week and had 15 points in the win over Nova. This white kid can shoot and jump out of the gym. Would be a nice grad transfer for WF.

He had 15 points in a win over the defending national champs and you think he would grad transfer to Wake?

Mounce is a sophomore this year, Furman has already beat 2 of last year's Final 4. Meanwhile, Manning has..............never mind.

Bob Richey is only 35. He has just over 1 year of head coaching experience.

Let’s hire him!

Wishful thinking. Mounce played high school ball 40 minutes from the WFU campus and nobody from the WFU staff gave him a look.

Not saying we should hire him but he’s already got better wins than Manning ever will in his just over 1 year at little old Furman.

Never heard of him, is he Furman's coach? If he is, then Buddie must have made a good choice.

Yes.

Promoted assistant when the HC (Niko Medved) left for Drake. That lasted one season and then Niko went to Colorado State (where he’d been an assistant).

Richey gave an excellent interview after the Villanova game. Seems to be a talented guy. Should keep an eye on him.
