Republicans Shut Down the Federal Government Again & Suffer Humiliating Defeat

Hey, MSM! Want to talk to some urban minority millennials?

“Nah, we’ll just check out AOC’s twitter feed.”

This focus on rural Trump voters is a combination of rubbernecking by urban elites and people who grew up rural trying to check back in on places like their hometowns.

Major media outlets do whatever is cheap and/or profitable. Why have a ton of journalists in the field when you can have opinions in the studio and a mechanism like Twitter to feed you content 24 hours a day?

Trump’s phony ‘compromise’ has now been unmasked as a total sham

But on Monday night, Senate Republicans released the bill text of this supposed “compromise.” Surprise: It has been so loaded up with poison pills that it looks as if it was deliberately constructed to make it impossible for Democrats to support.

If so, that would be perfectly in keeping with the M.O. that we’ve already seen from top adviser Stephen Miller, who appears devoted to scuttling any and all policies that could actually prompt compromises but which don’t endeavor to reduce the total number of immigrants in the United States to as low a figure as possible.

SCOTUS just put off a hearing on DACA, so it's going to stay in effect until at least the fall from what I understand. Kind of takes that "compromise" point off the table.

The continuing resolution is a scam if you actually want the government open after the 8th. They will use it to pay all the people their backpay, then go right along with another month of no pay and avoid the debacle of air travel shutting down, super bowl fiasco, etc... Then we just start at square one again, weeeee (granted if you are one of those unpaid people you should be paid but your suffering is probably the only thing that will end the shutdown permanently)

Right. The goal needs to be making sure Republicans don't hold government hostage to get what they want.

Given the polls, it's pretty clear that the Republicans are losing this shutdown fight in the court of public opinion, and I don't think that's going to change. For the GOP it thus makes sense to reopen the government temporarily, then develop a strategy to try and win over public opinion in the next shutdown if it happens (and it probably will, unless Trump backs down on the wall, which he won't). McConnell may be scum, but he's very good and clever at these sorts of things. A temporary opening for even a few weeks will give Trump and the GOP a chance to regroup and maybe win the next round - they definitely appear to have lost this one.

What’s crazy is the continuing resolution let’s open the government is a Democrat plan.

Republicans Shut Down the Federal Government Again

Right. Is it the same Democrat plan from a month ago?

Jose Andres is helping feed federal workers in DC. He organized, prepared and delivered millions of millions to the survivors in Puerto Rico. Today, they created thousands of hot meals and bags of food.

Andres is a saint.

Right. The goal needs to be making sure Republicans don't hold government hostage to get what they want.

Exactly, because the toddler-in-chief will hold the government hostage again.

You have to marvel at the size of his balls to create a problem by trying to get rid of DACA and using keeping it as a bargaining chip.

I guess if it works for Somali pirates and South American rebels...

Why did the wall become a crisis after Democrats won back the House? Republicans had control of both houses of Congress and the Presidency for two whole years and chose not to build the wall and end the crisis. The shutdown began with Republicans still in control of both houses of congress, yet those Republicans who lost couldn't be bothered to return to Washington to end the Trump temper tantrum. The only reason Trump shut down the government was because he thought it would make the Democrats look bad when they didn't give him the wall.

It reminds me of the Obamacare repeal and replace rhetoric. Republicans had eight years to come up with a workable replacement, and the world is still waiting.

Exactly, of course.

It’s a totally made up crisis. As is most every Pub “issue” for the past decade.

Fuck ‘em and their selfish and destructive self interest.

The shutdown is all about making it hard for House Dems to do their job. Republicans don’t want government to function. Simple as that.
