'19 Special & '20 Congressional Election Thread

The death of the blue dog democrat led to the tea party and later Trump. Both sides could afford to have more people in the middle right now. Too many in congress speaking WAY past each other with no bridge.

I say that, but at the same time, I'm tired of the dems constantly having to compromise with lunatics like tea partiers and Trumpers. While I'm not for radicals on either side, I'm happy the left has finally grown a sack and thrown some pitbulls into the arena.

i mean that's cville's number, i'm just looking for someone who won't curse and impeach trump with one breath and give him three quarters of a trillion dollar pentagon budget with no oversight with the next

This might be shocking, but hear me out: just because a United States Senator doesn't agree with TownieDeac more than 90% of the time, does not mean he is not good at his job. Most importantly, it doesn't mean he is not a much better alternative than Thom Tillis.

keep lowering that bar!

honestly the only qualification some dems have for the people they choose to vote for seems to be the letter next to their name and that they are Not Republican

It's a minimum qualification, but a very important one that you should acknowledge.

The 538 link you posted says Manchin votes with Trump 52.5% of the time. The highest Dem was Heitkamp at 54.8%.

The lowest number for a Republican is Collins at 67.2%. Heitkamp's 54.8% was replaced by 91.9% from Cramer.

So yeah, Not Republican is a pretty big deal.

If Bernie had gotten the nomination, this conversation would be moot. NC would re-elect Tillis and Trump would carry the state easily. Not to mention all of the state races that would be impacted because moderates stayed home rather than vote for a socialist or a white nationalist. Being a moderate isn't lowering the bar.

Eh idc if you’re independent or DSA or Working Families rather than Dem if you have good ideas and shut down the really bad ones. My point wasn’t even about that to begin with though, I was just saying to cville is winning the election the endgame or is getting policies enacted the endgame? Because more and more you see winning elections as the ends rather than the means for a certain kind of Dem.

Ok

I’d be ecstatic to have a Joe Manchin in every red state instead of the Republican who’s there.

For some, sure. But real change isn’t going to happen with the votes. There’s a major difference between even a Manchin and a Collins.

Ha is there anything to suggest he won't just be a McGrath type Trump Democrat? That was my point, I don't really think he looks like a 90% party liner, more like 50 or 60, which, yea is better than 0. Sorta.

He will probably be about the same as Kay Hagan was. Make of that what you will.

Based on that, 90% is an impossible standard that Bernie and Warren don't even meet.

I'm not sure where this came from, but I dont rate congressmen based on how often they vote on the party line. Joe Manchin and Bernie Sanders split from the party for mostly opposite reasons.

How many senators meet your bar?

bar for what? If I disagree with the Democratic establishment in general, it goes to follow that I would disapprove of nearly every politician who is a product of that establishment. Seeing as thats the case, I try to follow politics by individual issues, rather than following politicians. I read about legislation, and if I think its awful then I shit on the politicians who are responsible for it. If its good legislation (it rarely is) then I try to appreciate the politicians who are responsible for it. If its a bipartisan compromise type legislation that i'm uncertain about then I usually don't make any judgements. For the most part, I dont keep track of individual politicians unless they are really bad, or I Iike them a lot.

its easier to cast judgement on candidates because they are advertising themselves based on what they want to achieve. If a candidate shits on the progressive movement during their campaign and promises to work with Republicans, then I feel comfortable writing that politician off forever.

So which politicians do you like a lot?
