Bill Barr: The Cover-Up General

They’re just doing what they did for 2016. Fake investigations and foreign interference. Media played along. This time Republicans are combining the fake investigation with the foreign interference and media isn’t quite playing along.

Our illustrious Attorney General gave a speech Friday at Notre Dame's law school that was quite remarkable. The focus of his speech was the "religion in law", and Barr blamed drug overdoses, violence, and poor mental health on the "growing ascendancy of secularism" and the corresponding decline of traditional religious values: "Barr outlined a grim vision of cultural trends, saying a "moral upheaval" and decades of efforts to undermine religion had given way to growing illegitimacy rates, drug use, and "angry, alienated young males" -- a population associated recently with a spate of domestic attacks."

Barr said that "the campaign to destroy the traditional moral order has coincided and I believe has brought with it immense suffering and misery. And yet the forces of secularism, ignoring these tragic results, press on with even greater militancy...Among the militant secularists are many so-called progressives. But where is the progress...Those who defy the [progressive] creed risk a figurative burning at the stake: social, educational and professional ostracism and exclusion waged through lawsuits and savage social media campaigns." He added that "We see the growing ascendancy of secularism and the doctrine of moral relativism...Basically every measure of this social pathology continues to gain ground...Along with the wreckage of the family, we are seeing record levels of depression and mental illness, dispirited young people, soaring suicide rates, increasing numbers of angry and alienated young males, an increase in senseless violence and a deadly drug epidemic....Over 70,000 people die a year from drug overdoses," he added. "But I won't dwell on the bitter results of the new secular age."

Franklin Graham, Pat Robertson, and Little Falwell couldn't have said it any better. I'm surprised that Barr didn't show up holding a Bible and wearing a Puritan outfit. So, if you don't follow the conservative "Old-Time Religion", you're now a member of a "social pathology", responsible for all of America's social ills, and you're basically an enemy of the state. When do the witch trials begin, Bill?

ETA: A spokesman for Notre Dame's law school said that Barr would be speaking on "religious freedom." LOL.

I should add that it's very difficult to read Barr's speech and not to come to the conclusion that, if one reads between the lines, he thinks that gay rights, feminism, separation of church and state, progressive court rulings under the Warren Court, and pretty much every bit of social progress since the Fifties and Sixties is to blame for all of our current ills, and we need to go backwards and take away these things. He doesn't have the guts to actually say it, of course, but that's pretty clearly where he's going with all this, as are most social conservatives.

Of course you can actually trace much of that to conservatism eroding the pay and rights of workers. Everything from increasing stress and mental health to decline in religious participation because more people are working multiple jobs including working on Sundays.

But in the good old days, people happily worked 60 hours a week 6 days a week for low pay, virtually no benefits, and in unsafe working environments, and yet still gladly got up on Sunday mornings and went to the traditional family values conservative church of their choice! Economics has nothing to do with this...it's these damn socialist secular progressives keeping people from going to church that's causing all of our problems! One wonders how many unemployed or underemployed rural and suburban Evangelicals and conservative Catholics will buy Barr's argument lock, stock, and barrel. Probably a lot.

Damn socialist NFL putting football games in godless Europe and showing them on Sunday morning.

So now he’s going to piss off the next Dem DOJ.

The word on the street last week was that Zuckerberg was going to help Trump in order to avoid a Warren presidency that would break up his company.

I wonder if large social media companies are going to be regulated in the next few years, just as radio and television eventually were. I'm sure they'll fight it every step of the way, but at this point guys like Zuckerberg are screwing it up for the entire industry. Bringing back the Fairness Doctrine (which the Reagan administration dismantled) for TV news networks wouldn't be a bad idea, either. It worked well for nearly 40 years until conservatives finally abolished it.
